Can a Daily Tablespoon of Olive Oil Help You Lose Weight?
87Olive Oil for Weight Loss
Olive oil continues to get the recognition it deserves as part of a healthy diet. Recent research from Beloit College in Wisconsin, reported that taking 1 tablespoon per day, can help those trying to lose weight, by shedding a pound per week.
Olive oil comes from the olive tree (Olea europaena) and is a traditional Mediterranean crop. It has been a staple for thousands of years and its healthy benefits are making it popular the world over.
How it Works for Weight Loss:
- as a good fat - Olive oil, a good fat, has been shown to burn off three times faster than bad fats, like the trans fats found in our commercial food products.
- oleic acid content - The oleic acid in olive oil is the component believed to give it the fat-fighting benefits. The fatty acid helps fat tissues stop absorbing fat from blood cells. It also aids the fat cells by secreting stored fat into the bloodstream so it can be burned off.
- oleic acid conversion - During digestion, oleic acid converts to OEA, a hunger-fighting hormone. OEA stimulates nerve cells and tells the brain you are full.
- increases metabolism - Researchers have found that women who had olive oil at breakfast boosted metabolism by 60% more than women who skipped the oil. It is believed that olive oil burns hot and fast - creating a metabolic boost.
Researchers in the study recommend taking a tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach.
Health Benefits of Olive Oil:
According to the Mayo Clinic, olive oil is a healthy choice in fats. It contains monounsaturated fat which can lower the bad (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that about 2 tablespoons per day (23 grams) may reduce the risk of heart disease.
What kind to buy:
The least processed are the 'extra-virgin' or 'virgin' olive oils. These are the most heart healthy as they contain the highest levels of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant that promotes a healthy heart.
Olive oil is also known as a healthy raw fat (see link to raw fats). Raw fats are healthiest in their most natural state. Rather than cooking with, olive oil can be drizzled over salads, in soups, or over other foods.
See links below for raw fats, other healthy oils, and healthy eating suggestions.

Thank you Bk, I need all the help I can get to lose some of my eight. thank you for sharing your hub on the one tablespoon of Olive oil a day help you lose wight hub. thank you so much for your info.Godspeed. creativeone59
Thank you Bk - any excuse to have a l'il more olive oil! :)
It's sad that a lot of healthy fats have disappeared from our diet thanks to the 'skinny' look!
Hey BK, this is excellent information, as usual. It is a reminder for me to eat my salad a day with olive oil and lemon - my favorite way to get this incredible oil into my diet - thanks! Kartika
Thank you for your information and your great help. Hope this will shift my slim figure. It half sticks you would think it is cement.
I agreed with creativeone59. I need all the help I can get, LOL! Thanks for sharing, as always. Great hub!
Thanks for the tip BkCreative. I think I saw this Doctor on Oprah Winfrey who asked people who eat a slice of whole grain bread with a tsp of olive oil on it. Will try this early morning thing to boost my metabolism.
Thanks for the tip I'm going to try this for two weeks, and keep notes I'll tell you how it goes.
Good Hub, BKCreative - olive oil certainly is a great boon to overall health. It is exceptionally tasty, too - I like a little olive oil drizzled on a few slices of tomato, topped off with fragrant herbs. It is a wonderful breakfast :)
I love olives so if the oil can help me lose weight I will be one happy bunny
No worries - Bk. Adding a bit of feta is nice, too.
As for Ethel's olives, going from memory, they are 60 - 65% oil, depending upon the type. We will be picking our trees in a few weeks, so I look forward to some big, fat Kalamata olives :)
Thanks for the information
so you just take a tablespoon of it straight off a spoon?
I am not sure just what it is about olive oil but I would believe there is something to it. I know a 75 year old man who backpacks for two weeks at a time out west. He has started just about every morning of his life with a bowl of oatmeal with olive oil in it. Sounds gross to me but it must be doing something.
It does seem like everyone I know who cooks with olive oil are very healthy people.
I cook with olive oil, use it in dressings and some homemade creams. Great stuff!
BkCreative, I use pure virgin olive oil all the time. I am going to try this. Thanks for sharing as always great tips! Blessings!
The model Giselle, married to Tom Brady, apparently has a spoonfull a day. I am pretty sure she does it, lol. But I have always wanted to try it for about a month and see how it does.
This is a very informative hub. Thank you! I was wondering how to eat it in the morning? Any suggestions? I usually only cook with it. Best, GPAGE
I always cook with olive oil instead of butter! I grow them at home too! Great Hub.
Interesting info here. I use EVOO to cook with but I've never heard of actually drinking it like this for health benefits. Very interesting!
I use olive oil instead of tomato sauce for all of my pasta dishes.
Great informative Hub! Many people are thinking that this is only for external purposes! You have also added great useful links.
Yes, I believe that Olive oil is a good source of healthy fat.
But I think that virgin coconut oil is still the best healthy oil. Scientifically studies that it has enzymes that can control HIV to become full grown AIDS. In fact, it increase of CD4+ T cells and become almost no trace of the virus.
It also controls weights of obese people taking it regularly.
I lowered my cholesterol with extra virgin olive oil, and it had been dangerously high for years. I have it almost every day in salad and add applecider vinegar and either orange marmalade or splenda and add herbs you like instead of salt and you will never miss the salt. Good to add diced celery and apple too.Yum
Thanks for the tips. I am not over weight, but I have high cholesterol. Shall be sending this to family and friends as well.
Well it cannot hurt, may do me good so I think I will give it a try tomorrow. Thanks.
good information
sounds fine if you mix it in somthing
Olive oil makes for the best salad dressing once you get used to it. It also is a great replacement for butter on bread.
Olive oil, olive oil, one I must try. I seem to have tried everything else. Actually I did try it years ago, and I think it worked, but back then I could lose weight easily. But let's see how it works with this concrete that I'm carrying around. Thanks for the tip. Very good hub.
I love olive oil - when I cook, I use it. I'm going to try the "daily spoonful" and see how it benefits me.
great hub, thx
great hub, thx
Wow, awesome Hub! I put olive oil on my hair once a week but who knew it was good for your metabolism? Very cool!
Too bad olive oil is also one of the most expensive. Interesting, though. I especially like the fast metabolism :)...always a plus!
I think there's definitely something to this. I love cooking with olive oil and have taken oil supplements before. This is probably one of the more inexpensive routes a person could choose. Thanks for sharing this information on keeping healthy.
Good for you for promoting good food stuff! Thanks very much for the info. How do you store your o o?
I love olive oil and use it all the time, but I don't thin a spoon of anything will help you lose weight.
Maybe eating with a smaller spoon would work, but like anything, moderation is the real key to weight loss.
I could lose a few myself, my weakness is my wife and I eat out for entertainment...that's no good LOL
Great article. God knows I need it! Thank you ;)
Very interesting. This confirms the rumors I have been hearing.
Good post.it's interesting topic
Very informative. Will take the time to read you links after the weekend.
well come to my city
We have recently added olive oil to our diet, I really do like it and we are also trying to lose weight. So far my wife and I have each lost over 16 pounds.
great hub..
A straight tablespoon of any oil in the morning is kind of gaggy...I know, I have tried it with flax seed oil (which I ended up putting on toast.) I was given, however, a recipe by a young woman the other day which would make this morning tsp palatable. Cut up fresh grapefruit, drizzle your olive oil over it, and sprinkle it with sea salt. It's delicious. We can call it the Olive Oil/Grapefruit diet...a new twist!
For a long time I knew that olive oil was very healthy for many reasons. But I had no idea about weight loss benefits. Awesome!
We always use Extra Virgin Olive Oil for cooking even if it's expensive. We learned that it's good for health. Thanks for your nice and informative hub.
The olive plant is also a natural anti-microbial in that it kills bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites too. It's high time we started letting food be our medicine - very informative hub! Thank you so much.
I had no idea olive oil increased one's metabolism. That could explain why I have not been able to gain weight since I began using it. I take a spoonful at night, a few times a week, because it cleanses the liver.
I very much agree! I use olive oil after every bath or shower. I cook with it as well as take a swig or two after rubbing it on my body. It is also a fungal fighter, which is a silent killer. Great news, everyone should have at least two bottles at home. Monkshade
thanks BK< I dont know about this before, i might try this, I can see that you have lots of good articles on health, I like to read more, good day to you, Maita
Oh my goodness. Olive oil? I'll definitely have to try it. Thanks for this informative, concise hub!
I always heard olive oil is good for you. Your article put a lot of info in one spot. I think I need to use more olive oil.
I am sure that olive oil is useful and, living in a Mediterranean country, it is used a lot and supposedly contributes to great levels of longevity. However, I only wish that all 'losing weight advice' also stressed the two real keys - no over-eating and lots of exercise. Surely, they are the most important keys to weight loss (and feeling a good deal better)?
I cook with EVOO all the time, but never thought to have it by itself. Since I just finished writing up a hub about wanting to lose 17 pounds in 3 months, I think I am going to give this a try. It can't hurt. Plus, I have very dry skin, so two birds with one stone would be great. Thanks for the info. :)
I just had my first serving of olive oil this morning. I didn't think I could drink it straight, so I put it on a slice of whole wheat toast. It was "interesting". I can't say I loved it, but it wasn't bad. After eating the toast I don't think I will be able to have it straight, so I will do the toast thing each morning and see how it goes.
I will also change out my usual light dressing for olive oil on my salads at dinner.
I am going to add a link to this hub on my diet journal hub. I will keep you posted!
I think olive oil has the same beneficial effects as the virgin coconut oil. Just wondering which of the two is cheaper.
Thanks for sharing!
I have been an advocate of olive oil for quite some time now, using it regularly in a number of dishes.
Regarding the comments about it being good for weightloss, I have been advised that mixing a tablespoon of olive oil with apple cider vinegar and consuming it before a meal also helps weightloss - and helps to kill the olive oil taste that some people don't like.
Wow , learning the benefits that olive oil has in weight loss is just very timely. After all the parties I have attended during the holidays, I would probably need to grab a bottle of olive oil tomorrow and see how its works for me.
Excellent article. Have you tried flax oil. I have been taking flax oil daily for a while now and feel great.
Also I noticed someone commented about apple cider vinegar. I use olive oil, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and bragg aminos on my salad everyday. It is so tasty that you forget how healthy it is.
happy new year
Great hub! I think I'll try this since I myself have over indulged over the holidays. I'm curious about virgin coconut oil? Where can I find this?
Thank you for this helpful information. I will give it a try, I need to lose some extra weight. Thank you sooo much.. :o)
Good informative hub. I love olive oil but it's not very conducive for Chinese cooking as oo disintegrates in high heat. I use it on my salad. I've heard that it can help you grow longer eye-lashes too. Is it true? Thanks again.
I dont like the taste well enough to take it right off the spoon but maybe I could add it to salads. I know it's healthy but really dont like the taste. I sometimes add it to pasta. I know people who dip their bread into it.
I have also read that Coconut Oil is good for your diet. What is your opinion on coconut oil and weight loss.
Surely it can't be that simple? Very interesting though.
I will use olive oil so that i can lose a few kilos
Although I eat a healthy balanced diet I am partial to a good fry-up(naughty but nice) i.e. sausage, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes,or baked beans
and I especially enjoy my bread fried in wonderful olive oil!Great information as a lot of people are unaware of the health benefits of taking olive oil.
How nice to know that you can have your oil and still lose weight. I'm definately going to try it. Grat hub. Thanks.
Hi! This is very interesting and informative. I will be trying the olive oil. Thanks!
very useful info love it
I'm not sure about losing weight by consuming one tablespoon of olive oil daily, but I do know that some yogis recommend taking one teaspoon of olive oil daily for oiling of the joints in the body. I don't know how it works, but work it does. If you ask doctor or scientist if there is any truth in this, they will usually tell you it is all nonsense as the oil gets digested after it is consumed. But yoga is far ahead of science in many things. Make sure however that the oil you take is of the highest purity - first cold pressed extra virgin oil is O.K,
Olive oil is 70% monounsaturated fats, the healthiest of fats. Your recommendation for its use preference is commendable. It's the best for body protection. But it is an expensive commodity. Next to it is canola oil with 58%, a little cheaper. I use canola to keep my cholesterol level in place and make my heart happy. Thanks for this informative hub.
I looovvve olive oil. I would soak all my bread and noodles in it. I guess we can get carried away - all things in moderation. Thanks for the informative hub.
Hi BKCreative, I'm glad to see another Native from Brooklyn, That where I learn the valve of Virgin Olive Oil, my randmother who lived in Coney Island and Brooklyn most her life and I was raised there, by her, she fired all our Fish and used it in our Vinger and Oil on the Salads, She also had me use it on her feet when I would message them. So I really enjoyed your Hub. Oh I'm almost ready to publish my Hub on Coney Island, you mightenjoy it.Its up but not published.
this is a really informative and interesting hub! Thanks for sharing!
Great job
Yes, this is a very powerful oil, and me and my family take it to cleanse the liver with a little of lemon juice for 7 days, and my mum use as a moisturizer and she has a beutiful skin.
Thank you for this information. Olive oil is also so good because:
• Evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that a higher proportion of MONOUNSATURATED FATS in the olive oil is linked with a reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease. This is significant because olive oil is considerably rich in monounsaturated fats (most notably oleic acid).
• Olive oil contains the monounsaturated fat, oleic acid which has ANTIOXIDANTS such as vitamin E and carotenoids, and oleuropein, a chemical that prevents the oxidation of LDL particles. It is these properties that are thought to contribute to the health benefits of olive oil.
• Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the preferred grade for moisturizing the skin, especially when used in the oil cleansing method (OCM). OCM is a method of cleansing and moisturizing the face with a mixture of extra virgin olive oil.
Great article! I'm going to include olive oil in my diet. Thanks!
Great hub... and some great comments too lots of good healthy ideas.. love the tomatoe, feta and herbs!
I use a lot of olive oil, but not tried it as a daily dose - I'll give it a go.
Thanks for a good hub BkCreative
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is very expensive here in the Philippines but because I am convinced of its health benefits, I started including it in our salads (and for my home-made body scrub as well, LOL).
wow that is very interesting. I cook with this all the time but never thought it could help. Thank you for posting this
Informative hub!!!!!!
Olive oil is immensely fruitful for overall health of the individual. It is exceptionally fragrant herb. It tastes is scrumptious. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fat which can lower the bad cholesterol level in the blood. The whole hub is meticulously formatted and presentation is of par excellence. Thanks a lot.
Awsome hub. Great information. Bless you.
I can switch on to Olive Oil for Cooking but having Olive Oil in the morning that too empty stomach to start the day is not something i would prefer.
Amazing how these natural products can do so much - I use olive oil all the time in cooking but to swallow a spoonful first thing in the morning is probably more than I could manage! However, in the last seven years I haven´t needed to see the doctor or anything so I must be doing something right! Any other tips?
I never knew it could be taken pure. great information.
I heard about this in the book, Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About. Thought I would look on the internet for more information. Great Info, from everyone that posted. I will be sure to try this trick out! :)
It great to see this type of knowledge being spread. I have know for a long time that Coconut oil helps you lose weight but I have never heard of olive oil doing it.
You should write a hub on olive oil...
Excellent hub! It's so good to see people willing to share this kind of information. Keep up the good work.
Hi, I'm new to Hubpages and just came across some of your articles. Definitely good reads. Thanks for sharing your experiences and putting out some good info!
Hi, excellent hub. Would heating olive oil take away from its benefits? I personally love olive oil in cooking, and try to substitute it for butter whenever i can.
I love this hub. I started taking two tablespoons of EVOO one month ago every morning with my hot tea in the morning. I have noticed I feel more energized. I was feeling sluggish before, I can't really put my finger on it but I just feel better. So I am hoping it is the olive oil. The more people who read this hub the better. Good information!
Thanks so much! Gunna go eat some salad now (:
This is great information. I knew olive oil was good for you, but wasn't aware of the details. Thanks for sharing.
BK Creative, I agree with you - this much better than a vitamin! Thank you for a very informative hub. I am trying this too!
Rally informative for todays scnerio,
Dr. Ritu Mathur
Hey Bk, I had no idea olive oil could assist with weight loss. I'm so glad I use it in my cooking now, especially extra virgin. Great info as usual.
Olive oil is a great boon to overall health and it is tasty too, I really liked to used more olive oil.
Great Hub! Will try - I actually even like olive oil.
Has anyone really lose weight from the 1 Tablespoon of EVOO every morning
THANKS
excellent hub ,very good information for those who want to stay healthy ,there is one more oil that has wonderful effect on our health and that is flax seed oil it is equally beneficial it helps to reduce hot flashes at the time on menopause and as i have tested on my self I had an enlarged heart ,IT IS NOW BACK TO NORMAL AND i AM WELL .
BkCreative ,thanks for your appreciation ,I do practice herbs and believe in sharing it with others,Its nature that is so close to us and is so helpful like a mother ,but we are not making proper use of it .
I like to put olive oil on my salads, I haven't tried cooking with olive oil yet, but it does seem to be the healthier alternative to regular cooking oil.
Thank you BkCreative for your useful hub, I've rated up & awesome.
Iam definetly going to try olive oil would love to stabalize my weight.thank you
Iuse the olive oil 1Tablespoon in the morning, my skin feels more moist but i gain some some weight on my legs.Could you tell me what i am doing wrong Thank you.
This is new, IT olive oil in the morning to be healthier and lose weight. Can't wait to tell my children! Thanks!
I've been taking olive oil in an empty stomach for five days now and I'm buzzing with energy.I have lost a bit and it curbs my appetite, have to force myself to have something.I've been a fatty fat fat all my life.Thanx for sharing.
Wonderful hub! I knew many of the benefits of olive oil, but there are even more it seems! Perhaps I will try using it as a moisturizer, I have very dry patches on my arms that lose their pigment after a point. Do you find you need to watch your fat/oil intake throughout the rest of the day so that you don't consume too much, after taking a tsp to a tbsp at breakfast (I believe I've read you should consume ~3-5 tsp oil/day)?
I just started this olive oil technique a couple days ago and I feel it definitely curbs my appetite. I hope it's really helps.
Thank u. My problem is not having 3 or 4 tablespoons ofthe stuff. I loves me some olive oil.
There was another diet I read about on here for hyper kids, only food that is natral. Would olive oil be on this?
I was wondering if a person could add the 1 TBSP to a bit of juice to help it go down? Anyone try that?
You should get the kind that says "cold pressed" extra virgin olive oil. If it does not say that, then the pressing may generate enough heat that it cooks the olive oil and it is no longer raw.
For a good salad dressing mix olive oil with about the same amount of raw apple cider vinegar. This vinegar will also help you to lose weight.
According to a herbal research. Olive oil has its curing effects for almost all the diseases. It also boasts your immune system. So, it is great to have a tea spoon of it in your daily diet.
What an awesome Hub! I use olive oil extensively and I knew it helped out with weight loss but I wasn't sure how. Now I know! I'm definitely going to make sure I'm getting some olive oil daily. Thank you!
"First cold pressed" extra virgin olive oil is the best olive oil to buy per some Italians I know.
My pleasure - thanks for the awesome Hub.
I've been drizzling EVOO onto my oatcakes covered with avocado topped with mushroom and tomato for breakfast. Keeps me full for hours. I usually add some chilli for a little kick as well. My tummy is getting smaller every week :)
I used to cook with Olive oil. I will try taking 1 tbs. per day as i am fighting to get weight los. Thanks for this great idea.
Thanks same to you...
Hi BkCreative! It is very interesting and enjoyable to read this hub. I love it when co hubbers are giving and getting good information about health. Yes, olive oil is very healthy. I´m using it for years in cooking and salad making. Although I use olive oil for my hair mask, body scrub and massage, I have not drink it every day and I will try it. Thanks for your great hub.
I just started using extra virgin olive oil for my scars...and now ive noticed that the part of my skin that has scars is almost gone..thanks for all the info i love using it now...
I knew olive oil is a very healthy oil, but I had no ideal it helps one to lose weight.
I have now started using Olive oils for baking and cooking that are made for that, besides the extra virgin I already use in salads etc. Hearing that Italians have such a lower rate of heart disease and attributing that to olive oil has me sold, I rarely use any other kind of oil. Great hub.
Today is Day 1 of my new olive oil plan. I did take 1 full tablespoon of virgin olive oil and just swallowed it down. It was actually pretty tasty! I was nervous about being grossed out by it, my mouth feeling oily, or just plain being made nauseous by it but none of that happened. It was cool in my mouth, almost like cool water and it slipped right down my throat no problem. I was very surprised to find that it did not leave my mouth feeling oily, nor my tongue, as it does after eating a few olives. I can kinda feel it in my throat but its not a bother, just the only thing I noticed as an effect of taking it orally. It's been about an hour and I must say that I AM hungry but it is also almost 11 AM and I haven't had anything but the oil so go figure! Thanks BkCreative for your hub...and the others I have found related to it. Great stuff!
Day 2 and it was no issue -- I ate a mango as a snack about 2 hours after, a mid-day salad with an avocado and I haven't really had the urge to snack, as I usually do. We'll see how it goes tonight. Last night I totally blew it with ice cream so I'm going to try the suggestion of splitting the "dose" up into two times a day and see if the afternoon boost gives me more staying power through the evening. Of course having finished the ice cream off means there is none left to "blow it" with. Hey -- I should try the olive oil thing before going to the supermarket, too. I'll give it a shot the next few trips and see if I've managed to stay away from bringing the bad choices home.
i will definitely try for 3 mnths coz i am really tied of my own body. i really hope that it will work in my body.
I have been believeing for healing in my stomach lately so I will definitely start tomorrow morning with the olive oil.
can I use the extra virgin olive oil in the plastic bottle?
Thankx for all that information ...but I dont like his taste.. i want to lose my weight, so i take it with curd & water..
Another excellent hub on loosing dangerous fat with healthy foods and eating practices. Thanks Up and awesome! Also, Google +1
I use olive oil practically every day. I usually limit it to only one tsp per meal, at 40 calories each. I've been trying to clean up my act over the last few years. It took me a while but I finally get it, that a healthy diet and a healthy body goes hand in hand.
very good information,i realy love it, sound mind live in sound body
Excellent hub, maintaining good health is one of the most important aspects of our lives.
Cheers,
admin@ http://loseweightblog.org/
Hi, is EVOO, good for hair growth as well as lubricated joints, decreasing belly fat,and energy booster, thanks sooooo much, please keep the good facts coming HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY
I just want to say thank you for the post! For the people that don't like the taste straight, purchase some wonderfully pure EVOO online straight from Greece. The taste is so delicious compared to what you can get in a grocery store in the US. It's usually cheaper than grocery stores too. I got 2 litres for $15
I have learned to use ONLY EXTRA VIRGIN Olive oil for ALL my cooking.. and don't believe those that tell you it is not good for deep frying... balder-dash...I have been using it for deep frying for years... it only smoked once on me..when it was a bit old and had too much rubbish on the bottom of the pot..Yeahhh COOL DADDY
try oil pulling - amazing earthclinic.com
will start the tablespoon tomorrow 2/1/12 let you know how i get on ,,love the info on the hub thanks
Wow I just came across this and I am true amazed!!! I picked up a bottle today to try start using it on salads but now my face has olive oil on it and I am going to try day one with a tablespoon Thank you all :):):) I will let you all know how it goes by te end of the week
Just buy a bottle and will try it tomorrow morning. I also have a high cholesterol..I hope it may help..
Olive oil being in my diet has dropped my high blood pressure back to normal and kept it that way.
Hallo everyone here:
We knew all these things when we were young my parents said always ( Our beloved prophet muhammad peace be upon him said) Hazrat Sayyed Al-Ansari narrates that the Prophet (Pbuh) said “Eat the olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is a holy (mubarak) tree.” (Tirmizi, Ibn Maja)
All these is foods of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh)

It's so good to hear from you again! I just purchased a whole bottle of virgin olive oil the other day (you know I love the stuff), so in addition to cooking with it, and using it as a skin moisturizer, I'm going to be taking a "(table)spoonful of olive oil" every day. Thank you so much for this great information. You always deliver.
