Easy Facial Scrubs and Their Benefits: 4 Recipes
By BkCreative
4 Easy Facial Scrubs
Making your own facial scrub is a sure way to know that you are using natural ingredients. Natural ingredients have been shown to be safe, effective and also inexpensive. The simplest ingredients - usually on hand - make excellent facial scrubs.
I admit that I am not known for going out of my way to make elaborate or fancy scrubs (see the link below for very simple body scrubs). I feel the simpler they are the more likely you are to have the ingredients on hand and you are also more likely to do the scrubs. Could anything be easier that baking soda and water?
Also included are variations for two of the recipes
Benefits of a Facial Scrub
A facial scrub helps remove dead skin cells, dirt, makeup residue, blackheads and other impurities from your face. Done regularly, a facial scrub also helps stimulate skin cells and helps reduce or prevent fine lines and age spots.
Note: Be sure to read the tips below for doing a facial scrub
Four facial scrubs
Baking Soda Facial Scrub (Can be used as a mask - recipe also included)*
Use aluminum-free baking soda (The one we used is called "Bob's Red Mill Aluminum Free Baking Soda")
Baking soda can be used to make the facial scrub or a mask by adding just water but they are done just a little bit differently.
Note: A friend who always does this mask and turned me on to it - recommends only using aluminum-free baking soda, so this is only kind I use. See my friend modeling in the December 2011 issue of Essence magazine, p. 104. She makes every kind of natural product.
1- For the baking soda facial scrub
- About 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- water
First rinse your face with warm water
Then mix in your palm the baking soda with enough water to make a loose paste
Massage gently paste into your face in circular motions
Leave on for a minute
Rinse with warm water and pat dry
Variation -
For the mask (the mask is thicker, applied differently and left on longer)
- About 3 parts baking soda to
- 1 part water more or less
Make a thicker paste for a mask
Rinse your face with warm water
Apply the paste and leave on for about 5 minutes (no massaging) if comfortable
Rinse with warm water and dry
The baking soda facial scrub exfoliates and removes dirt and dead skin cells while preventing acne and making your skin extra soft.
2 - Olive Oil and Salt Scrub
- 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 tsp. salt (use fine not coarse)
Rinse the face in warm water and leave damp
Mix the two ingredients
Apply gently using a circular motion for about a minute
Rinse well and pat dry
Salt helps remove dead skin cells while improving circulation
Olive oil has oleic acid which nourishes the skin and holds in moisture
Note: Olive oil can be used with either salt or sugar to make this scrub - see variation
Variation -
Olive Oil and Sugar Scrub
- I tsp. extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp. sugar
First rinse the face in warm water
Mix the two ingredients together
Massage over the face in a circular motion for about a minute
Rinse with warm water
Olive oil has oleic acid - an ingredient that helps the skin hold moisture.and is nourishing
Sugar has glycolic acid which helps repair damaged skin and removes dry skin while it smooths
3 - Honey and Sugar Scrub
- 1 tsp. honey
- 1 tsp. sugar
Rinse face with warm water
Mix the ingredients
Apply to the face in circular a motion
Leave on for about a minute
Rinse with warm water and dry
This scrub is good for skin that is likely to have acne
Potassium in honey makes it an antibacterial agent
Sugar has glycolic acid making it beneficial for repairing damaged skin and also for smoothing the skin.
4 - Sugar and Milk Scrub
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. milk
(Use whole milk if your skin is dry and skim milk for oily skin)
Rinse face with warm water
Mix ingredients
Apply in a circular motion
Leave scrub on for about a minute
Rinse and pat dry
Sugar has glycolic acid - good for repairing skin damage
Milk contains lactic acid - an alpha hydroxy acid - that is beneficial as an anti-aging ingredient (See link for easiest alpha hydroxy mask made with a few grapes. Alpha hydroxy is used in many skin care products)
Tips for a Facial Scrub:
- Avoid the eye area
- Always be gentle
- Start with a face freshly rinsed in warm water - avoid hot or cold water
- Don't forget to gently treat your neck as well and include it in your facial care treatments
- Massaging the face helps stimulate skin cells
- For oily skin you can use the gentle scrubs every other day
- For dry skin once a week is usually enough
- *Baking soda can dry your skin if used often, so apply a moisturizer after. I use Shea butter (see the link for information)
Then add a body scrub (See link below)

These are soooo easy and you are right - I have these ingredients on hand. I will start with baking soda - and I do know honey and olive oil are so moisturizing. Thanks for a great useful hub!
I just have to thank you BkCreative for this absolutely useful hub on how to make my own easy facial scrubs and masks. I love natural products! You should see how excited I am about all that you have shared. Wow! Voted up and across and will bookmark as well.
vocalcoach~
The easy baking soda scrub is one of my favorites TheListLady because it is sooooo easy and it works. My friend always does a mask that she swears by to prevent acne.
Yes, the ingredients, at least for some of them, are usually on hand CountryCityWoman - making these scrubs so convenient. And this is a nice reminder that we can do something for ourselves - something so easy that works.
Love your enthusiasm vocalcoach! I'm so with you about using natural products - they are safer, they work and no need to spend a fortune and wonder what's in that tube. Thanks too for your vote. Yay!
I am definitely bookmarking this hub, BKC, although the facial scrub recipes are so simple, it'll be hard not to remember them. I do have one question - where does one find aluminum-free baking soda? I had no idea baking soda contained aluminum.
Rated up, (extremely) useful, and awesome!
Hello PWalker281 - first thanks for the suggestion to write this hub - I love these easy recipes.
The baking soda my friend and I bought is called Bob's Red Mill Aluminum Free Baking Soda (I think I'll put that in the hub) and now it is sold in all my local supermarkets. I think I paid about $2.00 for 16 oz. There was a time you could only find this at those health food stores. I'm sure there are other brands but I don't know them. This Bob has a long product line of all sorts of flours and grains etc.
Of course, it's sold on the internet - but then there is the cost of shipping. Hope you can find it locally - and thanks for the rating - yay!
Carolyn
Well, I'm glad I suggested it Carolyn, because these recipes are SO easy to make, I have no excuses now not to pamper my face (and skin). Thanks for the info on the Bob's baking soda. I'll have to look for it.
Patrice
Thank you for the recipes, BkCreative. The facial scrubs look so easy to make! I'm looking forward to trying them.
I am a big fan of ' shea butter', I don't know if you remember but you gave me some a few years ago, and now I do not leave home without it. Since I am still raising kids, this works for me, I just put it on and go, it is great for aged facial lines and dark spots.
I just turned my brother on to it, even though he is younger he looks older then me and his life style is a lot less then mine or so he say......
Good hub.....I may try the baking soda thing....
True PWalker281 - we have no excuse to not pamper ourselves. It is such a good habit - and then we just go ahead and look and feel sooooo good, so fabulous.
Easy like Sunday morning AliciaC. I think you will like them.
Ah, yes Jo! So glad you are still a big fan of the shea butter - could this be why your skin still looks so flawless? Haha - love that your younger brother looks older. Knowing your busy schedule I do think you will like these super easy scrubs and I know you keep a well stocked house - so these scrubs are just waiting to be made.
This is great I love naturals inside and out. Voted up.
Polly
So true Polly - best to go natural both inside and out. Lovely! And thanks for the vote!
That sounded great and I could do with that. You are great.
Thanks so much Hello, hello. Always good to hear from you.
I love all your recipes. I believe that it work for you. I'll show this hub to my sister. Thanks for writing and share with us. Rated up. Have a nice weekend!
Prasetio

Thanks prasetio30. I hope your sister likes them and thanks for the rating. Enjoy your weekend too!
You're welcome Thelma Alberts. These scrubs are easy to make and they do work. Yay!
Hi, these are great ideas! I usually just use salt but now I am going to experiment! thanks for all the great tips, bookmarked, rated up! cheers nell
So glad you like Nell Rose. And thanks for the rating.
Thanks. I use face scrubs and it would be nice to make my own (organic) instead of buying it. I like number 3 and 4 on your Hub.
Excellent. :)
Thank you Lady_E! They are so easy to make and I think you will like them. Enjoy!
I have never heard of baking soda scrubbs. Thanks, this is something to bookmark to use. I know of a lady that makes her own scrubs that are organic, but most of the time I don't have the ingredients around.
Thanks again!
Great information. Thank you for sharing these recipes. I use an olive oil and sea salt scrub which is good for the whole body especially tired feet
You're welcome tipoague. And I think you will like not only the simplicity of the baking soda scrub but that you will feel results right away.
You know mljdgulley354, I have both olive oil and sea salt and always have both on hand and know for sure that recipe works well.
Thanks for the comments.
I like the olive oil and sugar scrub. Great Hub!
Thanks so much Kristine Manley and great to meet you too!
This is great! It amazes me that people will pay so much money for "good" facial scrubs when you can make one at home with ingredients you probably already have.
I love to use coconut oil... I rub it all over my body, face, and hair, then let it sit for 20 minutes, and then hop in the shower to wash it off with shampoo (that seemed to work better than the soap to get the oil to come off, I think maybe because shampoo is made to get rid of oil in your hair so it worked on the coconut oil). It makes my skin and hair so soft!
I'm going to have to experiment with some of these ideas... Thank you!
Thanks for that coconut oil tip Deanna992 because I just bought a new bottle. I've been using it for oil pulling but I think I will do this rub, my hair can use it.
So true! We pay billions each year for cosmetics - so many are toxic - when we can easily be healthy and gorgeous with what we already have. Thanks for commenting!
Votes up. Wow, I didn't know you could make all these different items and the benefits are really great. When you think about the high cost of these products in stores, you would figure more people would try these recipes. At least this way, you know what is in the actual product. A very well informed article. Hope you have a great day and take care.
Thanks so much thelyricwriter. I'm just so amazed at how well all these products work. I've tried many products over the years and I have to say I pretty much look the same but have spent lots of money. So what was the point. Yes, I'll stick with all the natural items now. They are readily available and they do work.
BK I can not believe you are a fan of the baking soda scrub. I thought my cousin was nuts for using baking soda on her skin. I listen to how she uses it to cleanse her skin. I just thought to myself yeah right. ...And now I see you and TheListLady talking about the same thing. Still not completely sold on the idea, but I am loving the sugar and honey scrub. Thanks for sharing with the HP community.
Ah adrienne2 - another great testimonial...from your cousin! Great! Baking soda is just so simple and so safe and easy to use. And when you bathe just wash under your arms with it and get rid of that toxic deodorant. Thanks for commenting!
BkCreative, Great hub! Wonderful natural organic facial scrubs! Thank You for sharing, Peace & Blessings! & Voted Up!
You're welcome DeBorrah K. Ogans. And thanks for the vote!
I am going to try all of these recipes. Your hubs are addictive. I wish I could stop reading them and get something done around this house. Like maybe a facial scrub! Thanks!!!!!
Did you get a chance to try the facial scrub? I hope so and this is a reminder to me to pull out the baking soda. Oooh, maybe my hubs are just a soft addiction. Maybe a soft addiction is okay.
These are great facial scrub recipes. I've tried similar ones, but want to try these specific ones as I want to use ingredients that I would normally have on hand. Buying fewer products is going to become more important to society for several reasons. Voted up!
So glad you like the recipes RTalloni. And I'm so with you on that - all I want to do now is buy fewer products. I'm tired of a houseful of junk and surely products should all be multipurpose.
I had no idea baking soda (some) had aluminum in it! I have always used a baking soda paste to scrub and cleanse my face. Now I will be sure to use one free of aluminum. I will have to try the scrub with the olive oil and salt or sugar. Great cost effective tips to help us obtain and keep vibrant and healthy skin naturally.
You know I doubt it says aluminum on the label. It is just that one of my nature women friends brought it to my attention so we went shopping for the aluminum-free, which of course it did say on the label. Since it's my face - okay I will use that one. It is so easy Veronica Allen. Sometimes I take a long break from doing these things and then after a few months when I start again - what a nice difference.
Hi thanks for this great Hub. I am always looking for natural ways to help with my kiddos skin. Natural without all the chemicals:)
You're welcome The Stages of ME. One reason I got into natural cosmetics so many years ago is because I would not use the toxic products on my children's skin. It makes no sense. But then I realized as I was telling my daughter she could not use a product I was using - well, what am I doing using this jar of stuff.
Thanks for commenting!
it was great!
but im still lack of confident
im not beautiful~
Great hub, I use a lot of natural facial scrubs as well.
Not beautiful Veya Lavenderia? My mother taught me all women are beautiful because...well, because we are women. And my father agreed! Glad you like the information.
Glad to hear that everythingdazzles. I'm glad to see women using what works that is safe, natural and inexpensive rather than marketed items, filled with chemicals and at high prices.
Great Hub,Never tried baking soda. Thanks BkCreative for sharing.
You're welcome snigdhas.s - hope you like it!
Ive always likes baking soda as a scrub. Such a great natural and easy face scrub.
Many nice facial recipes. It is so much better for your skin to use natural products. Thank you for sharing them.
