Humming and its Healthy Benefits
78Humming for Good Health
The old saying 'the best things in life are free' certainly applies to the practice of humming. Some even describe humming as a form of therapeutic sound medicine. And all the benefits are free and readily available.
Everyone can do it - in fact, you can start right now, as you are reading this you can smoothly hum the words.
What are the benefits?
- Humming is similar to the traditional practice of chanting which, in turn, causes sound waves and vibrations to create a circuit of energy in the body and works to revitalize cells.
- Humming improves sinusitis - In fact many people suffer from sinus diseases and as a result are plagued by chronic fatigue. Humming improves the flow of nitric oxide which aids in effective sinus function. Humming will also clear blockages. By taking the time to hum, you may help or prevent sinus problems.
- Humming helps relieve physical stress and will soothe muscles in the face, head, neck and shoulders.
- Humming reduces emotional stress by reducing the number of thoughts in your head and helps with clarity of thinking. Humming tends to make you focus which is a good thing.
- Humming will significantly reduce the rate of breathing thus slowing down your heart rate which helps bring down your stress level.
- Humming calms your nervous system.
- Humming helps reduce insomnia.
- Humming helps lower blood pressure.
Haven't started humming yet? Stop now and do it for a moment or two. Or turn on the radio or pop in your favorite music and hum along with a song.
For an extra benefit, cover your ears when humming to help intensify the sensation. Happy humming!

I am going to start humming daily......which means everyone else will be covering their ears.....
I can't sing or dance, so I don't think I will be good at
this, but it will be great to annoy my family....
Yes, Of course I am humming after reading this excellent hub about all the benefits I will get from humming! I knew that singing was good for me; better air ventilation, happiness etc. But if humming gives me all these benefits it is even better! To hum is something I can do without disturbing my surroundings so much! I do think that I can sing pretty well so if I do disturb anyone it isn’t because of bad singing voice! (At least I think so) What I mean is that even a good voice can sometimes be disturbing for others. But to hum is another thing! It can even be relaxing to others!
As always I got great advices from you, and as you say, it is totally free!
Brilliant hub and very useful!
I have been know to hum from time to time. Maybe I should do it more.
Bk Creative, Interesting! Humming is really relaxing! Thank You for sharing another one of your healthy creative hubs! In His Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!
I hum excessively. I'm glad to know it is good for my stress level. I just hope it isn't offensive to others.
Oh my dearest friend, this is the most brilliant hub in the world, my mom hummed and my dad whistled, I am humming while I write your comment, love this hub, the best rate way up up up love & peace darski
I just hummed while reading this whole hub! lol
For some reason I feel like humming! Great hub. Thank you!
I never knew humming was good for you! I will certainly start humming a little more and singing a little less. But whistling I just can't deal with. Don't like to hear it, and I don't like to do it because it promotes wrinkles around the mouth!
I love to hum...It sets the tone for me while having my morning coffee and reading all my favorite Hubbers, like you...I get a kick out of the puzzled look on my cat's face when I start humming...
Voted up and useful, thanks, Larry
You know my mom was a hummer, whistler, singer, 16 hours a day up until the last few years with Alzheimer's and nursing home people claim she yodeled for them all the time and I never got to hear that but only a few years before her death a cardiologist said she had the heart of a young girl so I would say that is proof it is true. Great hub share, maybe will help many if they give it a try. I am more of a listener of music but some hum comes with that too.
Great hub, BKCreative! I wrote a hub a while back about the health benefits of "Om-ing" and knew the two had to be related since there's a hum when the Om is extended.
When I was in elementary school, I played the flute. I remember participating in a band performance for the kindergarten class (I was in the 6th grade). We played Ba Ba Black Sheep, and after that song, I felt exhilarated. I didn't know why, just that I felt really good. It's not humming or chanting but similar principles were probably at work.
Don't have a flute to play, so I'm going to be humming and om-ing a lot more. Thanks for the reminder. Rated up!
I am a hummer. However, I had no idea it could help insomnia. Thanks for the info. Great job.
I had no idea that humming offered so many benefits. Thank you for the knowledge!
It's always something free, something simple and something we've had all along that can keep us healthy. This beats all the toxic drugs out there.
Thanks a million and rated up. Yay!
Oh this is just so much fun and yes I did hum my way through it. I must remember to do this.
Thanks so much. Rated up and a yay here too!
Humming comes naturally to most of us, right? Especially so when we have completed a task satisfactorily, or even when we are certain of good news.
Thanks for pointing out some new facts. :)
What a very clever idea! I'm actually a hummer from way back (although that could be taken a lot of ways couldn't it?)
I can't carry a tune in a bag to be honest so I've always resorted to humming my way through life. Everyone always asks me if I just don't know the words but I just hum because I think it's less risky (and quieter) than belting out a tune and having folks laugh their heads off.
Now when I do it, I'll think - smart you - you're helping yourself! Maybe I'll not feel so embarrassed then when I'm 'humming along'.
I think I'm going to try some conscious humming everyday - who knew the benefits were so manifold! :)
Humming attracts mosquitoes, so please be careful also. There are fruit trees around the house so I've experienced being swarmed by them every time I hum, or even sing softly. Bydway I'm a professional singer so I don't think they're bothered by my singing, hehehe... It's a fact that humming really attracts them, right BkC?
I remember my grandmother humming all the time. It was quite soothing to listen to her. Since I can't carry a tune to save my life, I will hum when by myself. Great Hub.
Wow! I never knew any of that! Thanks for sharing this!
You caught me humming! Awesome :)
yes.. Humming is a real exercise and keeps healthy..
I have to keep humming. I believe this make me always healthy. Actually I did this during my brisk walking or jogging. Wow... it's so relaxing. Thanks for share with us. Vote up.

My grandma was known for her soft whistling. Humming, well I don't know...it's for some I suppose. Hey, maybe they should have a humming contest like American Idol? Do you think it would be successful? lol! just kidding. Great hub Bk. :D
What a great and refreshing topic, humming always makes me feel good! Thanks for the encouraging reminder to keep humming a happy tune. :) Katie
My friend suffers from insomnia and so do I at times so I'm going to have to try this. How cool! You know...I hummed while I was reading this! Rated it up!
BkCreative, I couldn't help but chuckle while I read this Hub. Cool it is. You are brilliant as one Hubber said - this Hub is fascinating.
I will Hum more often.

Nice Hub. In Yoga, which I practice, I chant the OM sound which creates vibrations in your brain. I see that Humming brings similar results and slows down your blood circulation and brings you peace of mind.
Wow I often hum when I feel really really stressed out, to the point where I feel insane, and the humming brings me back to reality, calms me down and keeps me sane:) , Wonderful hub.
I knew there was a reason I sang and hummed the same song to my daughter at bedtime for the last six or so years...Thanks for letting me know it was healthy too.
I usually hum and sing fragments of song. If I didn't know the lyrics, I hum, then I sing alternately (LOL!!!). I've been bothered by my sinusitis, so it's really good for me.
Thanks, Ms. BkC!
Wonderful hub! I have many memories of hearing my father humm as a child and the feeling of contentment it would bring me!
Is humming good to reduce nasal sound
