Make Lettuce Tea for Insomnia

By

Romaine Lettuce

How to Make Lettuce Leaf Tea

If you are wondering what else to do with all that lettuce laying around the house - try making a great cup of tea for insomnia. This simple recipe for lettuce tea will help you with insomnia and also acts as a mild sedative. The recipe was found in a 40 year old herbal medicine book - and I have tried it. It works ever so gently.

After the basic recipe there is more information about the particular lettuce that I chose, romaine, which is by far more nutritious than iceberg. I always recommend that lettuce be bought organic only.

Recipe for Lettuce Leaf Tea:

- 2 outer leaves of organic romaine lettuce

- 8 ounces of water

Thoroughly wash the leaves and then simmer for 20 minutes in the 1/2 pint of water.

Strain and drink before bedtime

How does it taste? - I found it to be very light, mild, refreshing and surprisingly good.

Does it work? - I don't have insomnia but other than stir-frying leftover lettuce, I didn't know what else to do with it. But yes, even though I didn't feel tired, my eyelids insisted upon fluttering, ultimately closing - and quite soon I drifted off to sleep - and had quite a good rest.

How often should I drink it? - While it is recommended as a nightly drink - I'd suggest trying it first on the weekend when you don't have to get up for work and see how you feel. It is supposed to have sedative effects and I found the next day that I wanted to lay around and read a book. I didn't feel tired but wanted to lay around - it felt quite good. Perhaps that is the sedative effect.

What about the leaves that remain? - I poured the tea into my favorite teacup from Harrod's, and a couple tiny bits of the lettuce went in the cup. I liked the way it looked so I left it like that. The leaves in the pot tasted like very mild cabbage so I ate it. Tasty.

What are the health benefits of romaine lettuce? - Different lettuces have different benefits. Romaine lettuce is highly recommended for blood type A people and I do find I prefer it.

Benefits:

Romaine lettuce, also known as Cos lettuce, has 8 calories per cup and has:

- Vitamin A - important for teeth, bones, tissues, eyesight and the respiratory system - it has 82% of the Daily Value (DV)

- Vitamin C - offers immune system protection, repair and growth of cells and is a powerful antioxidant - has 19% of the DV

- Vitamin K - helps clot blood and is good for healthy bones and the proper growth and protection of cells - 60% of the DV

- B Vitamins - the main B vitamin is folate which helps prevent anemia and is beneficial for healthy fetal development. One cup has 16% of the DV. Other B vitamins are in trace amounts.

Romaine also contains - protein, calcium, omega-3, fiber and iron.

This is different! I do not like tea but I love lettuce so maybe I never found the right tea enhancement until now! What a cool hub, BK! You are true to your name...creative!

GreenGardenGuy 2 years ago

This works great, I do that sometimes. If you need something a little stronger, use wild lettuce.

HappyHer 2 years ago

I had never heard of using lettuce this way but I'll definitely give it a try next time I'm struggling with insomnia. Thank you!

Wanderlust 2 years ago

Very creative :) Sounds good, have to try it!

Darlene Sabella 2 years ago

I never heard about this what a great idea, thank you , this is awesome. Thumbs up...

theherbivorehippi 2 years ago

Now THIS is valuable information!!! What a fabulous idea!!! I will definitely try it. Thanks so much for a hub I can use!!! Rated up. :)

lmmartin 2 years ago

Who knew? Well judging by the comments, some did, but I am not one of them. I'll have to try this -- and can you use any kind of lettuce?

Paradise7 2 years ago

Very different. Lettuce tea. Not something I would have thought to do with lettuce.

Enlydia Listener 2 years ago

good hub...I almost bought lettuce seeds yesterday...now I will for sure.

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

Thank you for an interesting advice. I never knew about it.

BkCreative 2 years ago

Note: I must say too - that is seems to have a bit of an aphrodisiac effect - at least I think that is what was happening. I'll try again tonight!

Hello Ann Nonymous - I'd love to hear what you think of it - as a lettuce lover I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Yes, yes, yes, GreenGardenGuy! - indeed, I did the research on the wild lettuce thanks to theherbivorehippi, commenting below - and we both agreed we will one day grow it. It was described as a lettuce opium. Imagine - everything we need - it's already there. Thanks for that input.

Hello HappyHer - it was a bit of a surprise - I was going through this old herbal medicine book looking for some hub ideas and there it was - so I decided to try. I'm going to have some more later! Mmmm.

Hello Wanderlust - I hope you like it - it is nice and mild.

Thanks Darlene Sabella, for the thumbs up. Hope you like it. And...I think it also has aphrodisiac properties. Hmmmm.

Well, the herbivorehippi, I just told GreenGardenGuy above that you were researching wild lettuce and told me about it! I hope you will try this tea and let us know. I really think you will be pleasantly surprised. Oh, and thanks so much for your thumbs up and such a nice compliment. Yay!

Hello lmmartin - You know, the recipe simply said 2-3 outer lettuce leaves and I am thinking since it is from a 40 year old book it is probably iceberg because that was pretty much all we knew back then. I plan to try it with whatever lettuce I have on hand, even Bibb and the red ones. But I can say it has been effective with romaine.

I'm thinking Paradise7 - we can probably make tea from everything. It is certainly one way to get out the nutrients. I'm going to have to give that more thought.

Enlydia Listener - how great that you will be able to grow your lettuce - and then make tea. It has to be the best!

You're welcome Hello, hello. It was so much fun coming across this and then trying it - and finding it works. Wow!

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments and the great input!

Veronica Allen 2 years ago

I need this soooooo bad. I suffer from insomnia every night. I will be going to the store tonight and getting the ingredients. Thank you BkCreative. I have bookmarked this one, and I can't wait to try it out. If it works for me, I'll let my mom know as well. She suffers from insomnia too!

BkCreative 2 years ago

You make me so happy Veronica Allen! I think insomnia goes with motherhood. As a child I swore my mother never slept. Even if she appeared to be in a deep sleep if we spoke to her she always answered. Sometimes we tested her (simple kids).

I hope you and your mother enjoy this. It is such a nice pleasant smooth drink.

itakins 2 years ago

I love this-it's on the cards for tomorrow night-would be tonight but I've just had my nutmeg nightcap!Bookmarked and on to do urgently list.

PWalker281 2 years ago

Cool! I'm definitely going to try it.

Coolmon2009 2 years ago

Sounds interesting, I will have to try it.

BkCreative 2 years ago

Hello itakins - I would love to hear about that nutmeg nightcap. Maybe you will do a hub. We are all so ready to go natural and healthy all the way! I'm simmering some lettuce leaf right now. Have a 6am wake up which is not the norm which means insomnia - I need to go to sleep tonight.

Hope you like it PWalker. It's such a nice drink. For some reason I feel important when I drink it.

Hello Coolmon2009 - I think you may like it. Enjoy!

Thanks for the comments. Enjoy your teas!

lctodd1947 2 years ago

My husband has terrible insomnia and I do not have the romaine lettuce but I am going to try with just the other and see if it works for he and I.

Very interesting...thank you for sharing this with us. Great hub.

BkCreative 2 years ago

I'd love to hear how another lettuce works lctodd1947. It's almost 10 pm and I just had a delightful cup and I think it is already working. I need to get up sooooo early - which is when I can't sleep.

Thanks so much for writing!

lettuce is good for our health, really good~and delicious

BkCreative 2 years ago

Thank you so much for commenting. It does have so many benefits.

Feline Prophet 2 years ago

Thanks for the tip - I always seem to have more lettuce than I know what to do with and it ends up all wilted and sad!

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

We eat salads, especially romaine, almost every day. I hadn't heard of the tea possibility either. I might try this.

I usually toss a few romaine ribs to our dog who thinks they are a special treat. (Dogs like to eat a little grass to help their digestion, but the wild grass we have here in the woods, is a little rough for a small-dog tummy.)

VioletSun 2 years ago

Thanks for this tip! I had no idea lettuce was good for insomnia. Sometimes I discard leftover lettuce as I don't get a chance to eat it all. Have bookmarked this hub and giving it a thumbs up!

BkCreative 2 years ago

You're welcome Feline Prophet! Another thing you can do with left over lettuce even as it wilts is to stirfry in a little olive oil - quite tasty!

It's great Rochelle Frank that you know to give your doggie some lettuce. We have been taught that only commercial dog food will do and our dogs are becoming just as unhealthy as we are. I've given my cats grass and they love it!

Last night VioletSun had another cup of the tea and yes, I began to settle down and soon had a good night's sleep. I'm up at 6am now - and this is when I usually have insomnia when I have to get up really early. Thanks for the thumbs up!

Thanks for the great comments!

ethel smith 2 years ago

Whatever next. I have never heard of this but it sounds interesting. I shall give it a go

HealthyHanna 2 years ago

I have never heard of this, but because lots of my kids have insomnia, we are going to try it, nothing else has worked.

Hummingbird5356 2 years ago

I have never heard of this before but I may try it. An interesting hub.

Mystique1957 2 years ago

Wow, Carolyn...

This is truly a blessing! Being able to withdraw from artificial sleep inducers is a wonderful thing, and we get nourished in the process! Great Hub, dear!

Bookmarked, Rated up, and in my way to Stumble it!

warmest regards and infinite eternal blessings,

Al

Pamela99 2 years ago

I have insomnia so I will try this. I haven't heard of this before but I am willing to try anything to help. Great hub.

BkCreative 2 years ago

Don't you love it ethel smith - all these wonderful old things that have been around forever - are all brand new! This is from a 40 year old book - and everyone seems to know lettuce. I had some more last night - it works!

I hope your children like it HealthyHanna. It gently put me to sleep again last night and I will do it again tonight because I must get up at dawn again. Again, it did not make me feel weary but my eyelids insisted upon closing.

Hope you try it and like it Hummingbird5356. And we know romaine has some nutritional benefits as well - I'm sold.

Thank you Al. I wonder just how many other wonderful very cheap and safe and natural sleep aids are out there. We have been so blinded by the marketing of everything including toxic sleep aids. And yes, we get nourished in the process - can any chemical make that claim? Thanks so much for bookmarking, and rating and stumbling. It is appreciated.

Hope it works for you Pamela99. I'm totally sold. It just surprises me when something is so easy to do and so accessible - and has existed all along!

Thanks for the wonderful comments and I sincerely hope you all try it and like it. Even try other lettuces and let us know the results!

creativelycc 2 years ago

This is great. I can't wait to try this, I knew lettuce had great nutritional value. My husband will be surprised too, he always insists lettuce has no nutritional value, wait until I show this to him.

Jo 2 years ago

I have always suffered from insomnia, it is a family trait,

I remember my grandmother saving the juice from vegetables,

such as kale, turnip greens, etc. to drink before bedtime, I remembered the bitter taste, but she assured us it would make us sleepy, not sure if it did, my brother, sister and I spent most of the night trying to get rid of the taste in our mouth's, but we were very healthy, sleepless kids.

Not sure if I want to try ' lettuce tea '.

I have to get back to you on this one...

Lady_E 2 years ago

Very interesting - I learn something new everyday. I will give it a try but might add some honey to it.

Best Wishes.

dreamreachout 2 years ago

I thought lettuce is best for salad garnishing .. Thanks for the new idea!!

BkCreative 2 years ago

It'll be fun creativelycc - when you show your loving husband just how naturally beneficial lettuce can be. And then have a pleasant night's sleep too!

I bet Jo, you are one of those people doing 10,000 things. I'm not surprised so many Americans have such a hard time getting to sleep - we have so much on our minds. Ah, and how well I remember about collard greens - and all the juice remaining after it was cooked (pot likker) - it was never ever thrown out. It was filled with nutrients. To get us kids to try it, we had corn bread with it - great for dipping. I really, really hope you try the lettuce tea - and at least get one good night's sleep

I wonder how it might taste with honey, Lady E. It is very mild - but then the recipe calls for the outer leaves because the inner leaves may be a bit bitter.

You're welcome dreamreachout - I'm glad you like the idea. Seems more and more - what's old is new again.

Thanks for the great comments.

jayjay40 2 years ago

I didn't know you could make tea from lettuce. I do get trouble sleeping so I will bookmark this hub

BkCreative 2 years ago

Hope you try it and like it jayjay40. Thanks so much for commenting!

Pollyannalana 2 years ago

I haven't had insomnia in years, and really I discovered that was too much caffeine but I will try this, I did make lettuce soup this paste winter and I had no idea you could do that, but it was good, and this should be too, thx.

Shalini Kagal 2 years ago

I've never heard of this before - your hubs are so enlightening, BkCreative! I usually fall asleep the moment my head touches the pillow but I have so many friends who have such a problem sleeping so I'm sure this will come as a welcome aid! And I love the bit in your comments about stir frying it with a bit of olive oil when it's wilted. Love lettuce, love olive oil - I can see it's going to be a winner in our house!

tony0724 2 years ago

BK thank you for the tip. I seem to take Excedrin PM far more then I should and sometimes my brain can be quite busy. I will definitely have to try this.

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

I don't have trouble sleeping but I tried it and it tastes good. I'm thinking that if you simmer fresh vegetables of any kind, the leftover 'broth' from greens, carrots, asparagus,-- almost any vegetable -- could be a very nutritious "tea". Adding a dash of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar could also make it very tasty and good for you.

BkCreative 2 years ago

Well, Pollyannalana - the lettuce soup is a new one to me. It would be great if you do such a hub. I'm a follower and will get the recipe - and try it!

Thank you for the enlightening compliment Shalini Kagal. You are such a peaceful person - I'm not surprised that you rest well at night. I hope your friends try the tea and like it.

You're welcome tony0724. I know so many that use the Excedrin and other sleep aids because they just have to get some sleep - maybe this will work for you. It is also kind of pleasant to sit around with that nice warm cup and sip.

So true Rochelle Frank - didn't all our mothers and grandmothers know the benefits of using all the broth they cooked vegetables in. They were the true nutritionists because they knew how each vegetable would benefit us. I'm just surprised that something we usually think of as cold also can be stir-fried, used as a sleep aid/sedative - and then as Pollyannalana above says - she makes a soup.

Thanks for all the comments and input!

Home Boy 2 years ago

Lettuce Tea... never in my life I would have imagined it. I'm trying it this weekend.

akirchner 2 years ago

How interesting - I never knew! Will have to check that out.

BkCreative 2 years ago

I hope you like it Home Boy! I never would have imagined it. Especially, the fact that it actually works.

Please do check it out akirchner. I'm going to have to go through this old book once again and see if I can find anything else of interest. So people knew this 40 years ago and then we just moved away from all things natural.

Thanks for the comments!

prettydarkhorse 2 years ago

excellent information Carolyn and I salute you for this hub again. Thumbs up, I always find pleasure and great learning when I read your hub, natural way is the best! Maita

BkCreative 2 years ago

So true Maita - natural is the best - and it is there, already, existing in nature! And always has been. It is lovely to see us returning to the healthy, glowing people we used to be. Thanks for coming back with a thumbs up! Carolyn

Veronica Allen 2 years ago

The first night I tried this, I burned the lettuce - I forget it was on the stove :). I tried it the next night and did feel relaxed. It took me about half the time to fall asleep! My mother hasn't tried it yet so I will have to wait and see what she says. Thank you once again for this information.

sord87 2 years ago

I never heard of lettuce can get us to sleep! It was a good information,a good solution precisely!thank you for useful information!

BkCreative 2 years ago

You're very welcome Veronica Allen - I'm so glad this worked for you and hope your mom likes it too. And things on the stove, ah, it is why I boil an egg by bringing the water to the boil and shutting it off - the egg then cooks in the standing hot water - because if I had to time it - I forget about it - every time!

Welcome to the club sord87 - seems this lettuce tea is a surprise to all of us. I must revisit this old herbal book and see what else is in it.

Thanks for the comments!

Pollyannalana 2 years ago

I put up the lettuce hub, thank you. I was wondering if your lettuce tea might help with blood pressure? I am going to try it and see.I am always looking for alternatives for that. I bet it might.

Pollyannalana 2 years ago

Also in my soup I use iceberg lettuce which I have since heard has no nutritious value so I will use the romaine in it next time instead, probably need to cook longer though. But may be as beneficial as the tea and could use all the lettuce wouldn't you think having flavors to cover any bitterness?

BkCreative 2 years ago

I don't know Pollyannalana, if it works for blood pressure - it does have sedative properties and that should help - I think. I've read that dark chocolate helps high blood pressure, if it is over 70% - hope you let us know if the tea helps.

I want to try it in soup and think I will over the next few days. Never, ever thought about doing this - and I have some leftover romaine. Sounds great!

Thanks so much for checking back!

Amber Allen 2 years ago

Hi BKC

I would have never thought about using lettuce to make a tea. I will have to try this. I was really interested by your comment that Romaine lettuce is good for those with blood type A as this is my blood type but I've also just written a hub on The Blood Type Diet. Where do you get your information about the food for your blood type?

Amber:)

BkCreative 2 years ago

Hello there Amber Allen - You are very observant about the Blood type A comment - isn't it surprising that overwhelmingly, Americans do not know their blood type - how can it not matter. I had to ask my doctor about 15-20 years ago to do a typing when I had a blood test. I've read the D'Adamo book and found the diet to suit just exactly what I preferred to eat which is no meat or chicken - and other foods.

I'm going to check your hub!

msorensson 2 years ago

Hi, BkCreative,

Thanks, very informative hub!

I have heard the same thing with carrot tops, but this is the first time with lettuce.

I myself have no trouble falling asleep, but I do have a friend who is unable to get a full night's sleep.

I will suggest this to him.

BkCreative 2 years ago

The carrot tops sound very interesting msorensson and I will try it. I believe we waste too much food - and really no part of it should be thrown away - we just need to learn what to do with it. If I make soup I will put in the carrot tops - but a carrot top tea sounds quite appealing. Hmmmmm.

Thanks for the idea!

Eileen Hughes 2 years ago

thats incredible, who would have thought of using a lettuce, definitely not me. Thanks so much for sharing that.

BkCreative 2 years ago

You're very welcome Eileen Hughes. And it works for me - and some of the comments above show that others have used it and are satisfied too. Thanks for writing. This simple one ingredient tea that does so much - is quite a surprise!

Susan Carter 2 years ago

Thanks for this great tea idea. I have to drink caffeine free tea because otherwise the caffeine keeps me up at night. The problem is finding this kind of tea in bulk. Since I love "green" tea, this lettuce idea might be a great substitute, plus I sometimes cannot get to sleep and this would be a healthy alternative to drinking a glass of wine which leaves you foggy the next day. I also love the organic idea.

luvintkandtj 2 years ago

I love this hub. so many of my friends suffer from insomnia. my own mother has to take medication. I posted this on my facebook for everyone to come a read. great hub

BkCreative 2 years ago

I'm so happy Susan Carter, to say, that this does work. I've used it a couple times with perfect results both times. I went off to a gentle sleep and even felt relaxed the next day. Some hubbers have come back to comment here to say they have tried it with nice gentle results as well. Simple lettuce - it can probably do much more than we think.

Thanks for the loving, luvintkandtj! So many folks are affected by insomnia it seems. It's understandable because we are under so much stress. Thanks for posting it and sharing it. I'm hoping we all go as natural as possible and eliminate so much of our health problems caused by the unsafe toxic drugs we use for everything.

I hope you like it prowork. I recommend organic romaine and I can vouch for it.

Thanks for the comments!

Pollyannalana 2 years ago

I put this lettuce in my kale smoothie and in a day or two I will put in soup, maybe tea tonight, but I'm so sleepy already..if not tonight, soon, I got Dole this time because of that Romaine warning and it is the best I ever had, even my husband is eating it....and he hates everything.

BkCreative 2 years ago

Thanks so much for the input Pollyannalana! I always recommend organic and whole forms of the lettuce to cut down on handling. Ah, soon I will have a garden and grow my own. Romaine is so tasty!

Glad you and your loved on are having big lettuce fun!

Lgali 2 years ago

Very interesting hub useful too

BkCreative 2 years ago

Thanks so much Lgali - glad you found the hub useful!

nadp 2 years ago

I'm going to try this - it sounds great. Do you know what it is in the lettuce that has this effect?

Being a statistician, though, I have to ask - do you think you could be experiencing a placebo effect?

BkCreative 2 years ago

Perhaps it is something in the vitamin A - because it has such a high vitamin A content.

I'm not one to go to sleep too easily - I never have. Bed to me meant at least one hour of reading or even a video. But when I drink this tea my eyelids flutter and gently close - I'm having a physical reaction. A placebo effect? If it does, it is safe and gentle - I can live with a nutritional placebo.

GreenThumbLady 2 years ago

Oh my gosh! I have read about this but was so skeptical...I mean who has heard of such a thing? I'm so glad I found this hub! Now maybe I will try it!

Moon Daisy 24 months ago

Wow, great hub! We often have lettuce left over, and it just sits in the fridge for a while and goes off. And as a big tea fan who has just got really into finding random things and making tea out of them, this tea sounds like the perfect thing for me to try next.

Plus I am a bit of an insomniac, so I will definitely be giving this one a go! Thanks, big thumbs up. (Or whatever it's called now...)

BkCreative 24 months ago

I can't wait for you to try this Moon Daisy. I bet there are so many things we can do with lettuce! This tea has worked for me - and for some reason I feel so very happy when I make this. Maybe because I am not wasting lettuce.

You're right we can probably make tea with everything. I'm looking forward to your herbal hubs - and I'm going to look for more herbal ideas. This was so satisfying.

Thanks again for writing!

Veronica Allen 23 months ago

I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you .... my mother has been trying this for several weeks now and loves it! It has been very effective. It used to take her 40 minutes to 2 hours sometimes to go to sleep, but when she drinks this tea as soon as she hits the bed, five to ten minutes later she is in dreamland.

Plus it is safe and she does not have to worry about how it may interact with any of the medications she takes.

She wanted me to extend her thanks to you. This information has been a Godsend. Thank BkCreative.:)

BkCreative 23 months ago

Veronica Allen, I cannot thank you, and your mother, enough for coming back here and leaving a first hand experience. This will also be appreciated by others who read this.

It takes me forever to go to sleep too, about the same time as your mother. I just never think about it because I can sleep kind of late. But those mornings when I had to get up at 6am (and just thinking about that gave me insomnia) - well, this tea worked. I felt so calm as I dozed off to sleep. My eyelids would flutter and I'd be gone. No drowsiness or weird feeling. I'd just go to sleep. And I like the aroma and the taste.

So glad this is safe and working for your mother. Many thanks again for the update.

I never would have thought of using lettuce as a way to help with sleeping. You learn something new every day. I enjoy tea immensely, and will be sure to try this the next time I'm having trouble getting tired.

BkCreative 23 months ago

Hope it works for you. I found this tip in an herbal book almost 40 years old. So I am going through it now to find out what else was natural and worked. This is so safe and even healthy.

Thanks for your comment. I think we are all surprised - and people are commenting to let me know it worked for them too. Wow! Lettuce.

Hope it works for you. Wish I had some right now.

sweetie1 22 months ago

Hi BK this lettuice tea is so easy to make and has so many health benefits.. thanks for sharing it and hey can i put little sugar or sweetner in it? Would putting sugar reduce or finish them?

BkCreative 22 months ago

You can probably sweeten it sweetie1, but it is so mild and gentle you may not want to. It's such a mellow tea. It's so surprising that it works.

Thanks for writing!

Awesome stuff. I HAVE to try this. You see, I don't sleep at night, as I come from a long line of vampires. Or something like that.

Maybe this will help me and a few of my family members out!

BkCreative 22 months ago

Love meeting you BennyTheWriter/vampire. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. And I hope you let us know your happy results. I'm getting such positive feedback - and I can personally recommend it. It's just so wonderful!

Lita C. Malicdem 21 months ago

I eat Romain Lettuce for its crunchy feel in the palate. I'm at times sleepless. Now I know what to do with the stock that I leave untouched in the ref because it has become limp. I'll try this tea variation. Thanks!

BkCreative 21 months ago

It makes sense Lita C. Malicdem - as you say for that bit left over and there always seems to be a bit left over. And you're welcome. Thanks for writing!

Some awesome ways to make beneficial use of lettuce!

BkCreative 21 months ago

So true pager7 - we can probably do so much more with what we have. I must look into that.

Thanks for writing!

mulberry1 20 months ago

I may give this a try. I sleep like a log 3 or 4 nights a week. The other nights I'm up half of the time. I'll just wait and after a few nights of good sleep I'll give it try. The only bad part is I won't get any of those late night Hubs done.

BkCreative 20 months ago

This is so funny mulberry1 - because here it is after 1:22am and I am on hub pages - when I really should have gone to be at least 2 hours ago. And if I'm not online I'm watching home shows on HGTV well into the night/morning. Ah, well if we can, why not.

Hope you try it and like it. The taste is so...well, it's a happy taste.

Thanks for writing!

Interesting that the west are just catching on now, Chinese have been making SOUP out of lettuce since I don't know how long, but along with the lettuce, crushed garlic and a few drops of sesame oil before serving.

Actually lettuce soup or sheng cai tang (BtCreative this should be of interest to you as in Chinese lettuce has a "lucky" sound to it similar to the number 8 - should make another interesting hub) anyway lettuce soup can be ordered just about anywhere in China but you need to ask for it as it wont be on the menu

This is an easy dish for traveling vegetarians in any country, just make sure the stock is not from any animals or request just plain water

BkCreative 20 months ago

What a great bit of information ron turn. I'm so glad you shared this. Yes, the West is so far behind in natural healing and prevention. The objective here of course is to discount the wisdom of mothers, and push the multibillion dollar pharmaceutical industry and industrialized food. And our health is paying dearly for it.

Another thing is the sesame oil. When I lived in S. Korea it was real sesame oil - here is it so processed it has no nutritional value.

It would have been nice to know about sheng cai tang when I was in Beijing as I am not a meat eater. Perhaps I can find it in the authentic restaurants here in Chinatown - when I go to a local one - I'm still going to ask about it.

Fortunately, we have a forum like this where we can spread the word.

Thanks a million!

Ben Zoltak 19 months ago

Craziness, love it, and I do have occaisional insomnia so thanks Brooklyn Creative for this, who knew? Funny, I've never used left over lettuce for stir fry, I'll try that. Might I suggest using it for homemade stews and soups, also you can use small minced amounts in homemade salsa.

Thanks for the heads up, what a great organic thing.

Ben

BkCreative 19 months ago

In homemade stews - great! And it will give salsa that bit of color. I have become less wasteful. Everything will be used up - entirely.

Thanks Ben Zoltak - as a new dad there may be a time when you just have to get a good night's sleep - with no side effects. You'll go to sleep calmly and wake up calmly.

Thanks for commenting and passing on those tips.

Oh you're a SAINT! I have been suffering from insomnia ever sence the death of my mother and I have been diying to try hot tea you are so wicked great thank you so much!

BkCreative 18 months ago

What a lovely email Jules.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I understand what you mean about not being able to sleep while you are grieving, I've recently gone through this - it takes time and it should. If you have the time and check back I hope you'll let us know the lettuce tea worked for you in a nice gentle way.

Relax and a few deep breaths and wrap up warmly. Take care of yourself.

Seafarer Mama 17 months ago

Thank you for this wonderful hub, BkCreative. I have also seen recipes for lettuce soup and will try them.

Funny that I suffered from insomnia for several nights, both at my Mom's during Thanksgiving vacation and at home the first few nights after we returned. Last night, my family and I ate a big salad with very green lettuce (not sure what kind), and I slept soundly the night through. So the two events are likely to be related! I also sipped a cup of "lemon zinger" tea with honey (a personal favorite as sedatives go). Another benefit - my coughing attacks have been quelled, so I have more relief and energy from that, too.

I am doing a bit of food shopping today, so I will make sure I buy some Romaine lettuce.

BkCreative 17 months ago

And thank you for your kind comment Seafarer Mom. This is such a delightful tea and so calming. I just feel so good when I drink it. I made some of it very weak a few weeks ago and I think that was just enough for me to enjoy its sedative benefits without going to sleep - just so lovely. I felt happy!

Love that lemon zinger tea too, or even ginger and then with a bit of honey. Another calming soothing drink. Maybe I will have some tonight.

Thanks for such a lovely comment. Yay!

What's News 17 months ago

I never heard of this one. I'm going to give it a try the next time I find myself needing a good nights sleep. Thanks for the info.

scheng1 15 months ago

I am very curious about the 40 years old book. I think the author is very knowledgeable about herbal and plants usage. Hope you can share more.

BkCreative 15 months ago

Thank you scheng1 - I am going to dig out the book and see what else I can share. I remember reading something about onions. I'm putting this on my writing list! Yay!

Curious 14 months ago

This sounds awesome. I was actually searching for lettuce soup because I have a huge amount from my CSA. Can you share the name of the book? Thanks!

BkCreative 14 months ago

The book was "Herbs in Daily Living" - I think. Long gone because all the other information was pretty commonplace - like the benefits or garlic and onions and so on. But the lettuce tea I had never heard of and decided to try.

Thanks for commenting!

travel_man1971 11 months ago

I thought lettuce is only for salads or 'greens'.

What a short but concise hub! Thanks Ms. BkCreative for this.

I munch lettuce (organic one) once in a while. There's a local market (every Saturday) that sells organic product in the city (here in Naga City, Bicol, Philippines just along Magsaysay strip). It's always a successful event every weekend.

Thank you so much, for this!

BkCreative 11 months ago

You're welcome travel-man1971! I'm so glad you enjoyed the hub. We can probably do so many things with our organic fresh vegetables. I wonder what else I can make tea with - probably nice fruits too.

That market sounds so fabulous. Thanks for writing!

ravenblueu 11 months ago

This is a must try, i always had problems with sleeping hope this works. And sometimes you just don't know what to do with the extra lettuces in the fridge. This is a good idea, didn't know that the recipe existed a long time ago.

BkCreative 11 months ago

Hello ravenblueu! As I do more research about nutrition - and different lettuces - it seems lettuce has been used since ancient times as a sedative. Wow! Hope it works for you - it is such a peaceful type of nodding off.

Nice to meet you by the way!

RTalloni 11 months ago

Thanks bunches for the heads up on this hub so I can link it to mine on insomnia. I also want to try out the recipe soon so I can have personal experience to share when I tell others about it.

BkCreative 11 months ago

You're welcome - and great RTalloni! Like you I like to write from experience. This tea is just sooooo delightful.
