6 Essential Oil Baths

Feel like running amok? Enjoying a warm soak in an essential oil bath can help you relax.

Try adding a few drops of neroli essential oil to your bath water. Neroli oil, extracted from the fragrant flower of the orange tree (Citrus aurantium), has properties that are sedative, antispasmodic and even a bit hypnotic. It is also a natural tranquilizer for those who can't sleep at night.

Listed below are several essential oils to use in the bath and their properties. But first:

What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is a natural substance that is extracted from flowers, herbs, spices, shrubs, grasses, trees and resin. Usually a steam distillation process is used. Essential oils are used to help rejuvenate and energize the body. They are also used to help you relax, heal, soothe and relieve pain in a way that is physical, emotional and psychological. This is also known as aromatherapy.

Note: Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin - it should be diluted first, such as with a carrier oil used in #2. See more usage tips below.

6 Essential Oil Baths and Their Benefits

1 - Neroli Essential Oil - To Calm and Sedate

10 drops of neroli essential oil

2 - Sweet Almond Oil and Sandalwood Essential Oil - Moisturize and Heal Dry, Chapped Skin

Sweet almond is a light and easily absorbed carrier oil

Combine oils/add to warm bath water/soak for 15 minutes

3 - Juniper and Geranium Essential Oils - Calming and Healing

6 drops juniper essential oil/6 drops geranium essential oil

Add to bath water/soak for about 10 minutes

6 - Thyme and Eucalyptus Oils - For Back Relief

15 drops thyme essential oil/4 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Combine oils in hot bath water/soak for 15 minutes

After this soothing bath, I rub pure shea butter into my knees - achy knees gone!

For more information about the amazing benefits of pure shea butter see the link below.

Usage Tips:

- To keep a film from forming on the surface of the bath water, add a capful of castile soap. I use Dr. Bronners unscented castile soap

- Generally, a soothing bath takes 5 to 10 drops. Then soak for about 20 minutes to enjoy the benefits

- Store in amber glass, never plastic, away from direct sunlight and in a cool place

- Shelf life is about two years, however, citrus and pine oils loose potency after about 6 months

- Some essential oils may solidify; place in a bowl of hot water to liquefy

- Keep out of reach of children

- Do not use around your eyes

After reading your article, I will have to try some other ones...

Me too TheListLady - these soaks as just so...so everything! I admit, I think something is wrong with people that only shower and have never sat in a warm, relaxing tub. Mmmmm.

Just like Ardie, I started relaxing from just reading your hub, BKC! Taking a warm therapeutic baths with essential oils sounds heavenly. I have a thing for the scent of lime. Could be all those margaritas I used to drink ;-). It drives me crazy. Wonder if it comes as an essential oil. I'd snap it up in a flash. Great information as usual. Rated up and useful!

BkCreative 7 months ago

Well good news PWalker281 - I just checked my book and there is a lime (Citrus aurantifolia) essential oil. It is a skin conditioner, soothing agent and astringent. Now I want to take a lime bath while drinking a margarita. Thanks for the rating!

I need to get my bathtub back...Great info here, I'll pass this along to my little lady...Thanks for sharing!

BkCreative 7 months ago

You're welcome carcro. You know when I lived in S. Korea I had a shower room but no tub - so I went out and bought a large plastic tub just so I could squeeze in it and soak. I need that soak. Thanks for writing!

My favorite essential oils to put in a bath are lavender and lemongrass, but these other oils you mentioned sound very interesting, too. I think I'll try sweet almond and sandalwood. :)

BkCreative 7 months ago

Sounds so good OmParamapoonya - I'll try it.

I could so use such a bath right now. It has been dark and raining all day here in NYC with temps in the 40s. A soak now at 8pm would be just perfect.

I have some lavender flowers - maybe I can crush them or something. I need a therapeutic bath.

Thanks for the suggestions - and rated up.

I often get nasty backaches because of my osteopenia and because I work a lot on the computer. Might as well try your recommendation - eucalyptus oil. I have always used eucalyptus to make my room smell relaxing. Now I know that I can also use it for my back - never knew that. Many thanks! :)

BkCreative 6 months ago

You're welcome! How interesting that you were already using eucalyptus, kerlynb. It's like you knew it would be beneficial for you in so many ways. Thanks for writing!
