While traveling in picturesque Beijing a year before the 2008 Olympics, my fun tour guide talked about lucky numbers. The number 8 was and is considered a very lucky number. She explained that this is the reason why the Beijing Olympics was scheduled to open on August 8th, 2008 - making the date read 8/8/8. Ahhh! I love reasons for why things are done.
Because I enjoy feng-shui, I did know a bit about the auspicious number 8 but wasn't aware of the connection to the opening date for the Beijing Olympics. (As a matter of fact after I found out about the Olympic date, a year later on that date, I decided to play the number 888 - see the * below to see what happened).
Exactly why is the number 8 considered lucky?
According to Lillian Too, the Queen of feng-shui, the number 8 is widely regarded as a universally lucky number. This is because phonetically, in many dialects, it sounds like 'growth with prosperity.' Therefore, many people try to incorporate the number 8 in their telephone number (I've done this), on bank accounts, on car license plates, and on addresses, etc.
Also, according to Lillian Too, what makes the number 8 even more auspicious is that we are now in the 20 year cycle of the number 8. This cycle began in the lunar year of 2004 and will run through 2024. Thus, the very lucky number 8 is now in the 20 year cycle of the number 8.
Meanwhile, back in Beijing...
Back in Beijing, the tour guide went on to explain the feng-shui implications of lucky numbers. As someone who loves and practices the art of feng-shui (which is why I bought the bok choy - see link below), I was an eager listener.
Among many other bits of wisdom, my tour guide told me that if I wanted to go back to the US and make a lot of money, I should open a club and name it '98.' She assured me that it would do well with Chinese people. I haven't opened a club but I did investigate the number 9. I found out that It is best for 9 to be followed by 8 (thus the name for the club as my tour guide said). The number 9 is especially lucky since 9 multiplied by any number of times, then reduced to a single number, always reduces to 9. Fun!
For example: 9 x 3 = 27 and 2 plus 7 = 9
or: 9 x 9 = 81 and 8 plus 1 = 9.
(I tell my students this so they can check their answers when they multiply a number by 9)
And I did buy a lucky bok choy (or pak choi) at the jade factory (see link below). And there is a story that goes with this.
The story that goes with the lucky bok choy
Prior to visiting Beijing I was living in Seoul. My feng-shui partner Christine, and I had discovered in a Lillian Too book, that the bok choy is auspicious. So we set out for the China Town in Korea in search of a bok choy and other lucky items. We didn't find exactly what we were looking for - we wanted something fancier and made of jade. But now, here I was in the land of feng-shui with a tour guide saying all sorts of lucky feng-shui things including how lucky the bok choy is. And a jade factory was nearby.
At the jade factory, there must have been hundreds of bok choys, one more beautiful than the next - and in every price range. I bought one. Has it brought me great luck? I don't know, but I feel very lucky! Feng-shui has predicted, for me, an ox (or water buffalo, or in Korea - a cow) - that next month begins much prosperity and abundance. So...I am prepared to welcome it.
And why is the number 4 considered unlucky?
While the number 8 is considered extremely lucky, the number 4 is considered to be the most unlucky. This is because the number 4 sounds like 'death' in many dialects. This was also true when I lived in S. Korea. When I was on an elevator in a tall building I noticed that each floor was numbered except number 4 - that was written out in English so it would be pronounced that way.
What happened when I played the number 888 on August 8, 2008
*Do many other people think the number 8 is lucky? Absolutely. When the opening day of the Olympics came on August 8, 2008 (8/8/8), I decided to play the number - something I have done maybe five times in my life. Yes, I would go out and play 888 and be one of only a few people in the whole world that knew about the lucky number 8 on that particular day. I told a lot of my friends. Around 11am I casually strolled up the block and around the corner to play the number. I was told 'Sorry, sold out!' Huh? Convinced that the store clerk didn't know what he was talking about I went to another store. Yes, the number 888 was sold out - and had been for quite awhile. I had no idea that it was limited how many people can play a particular number - but a lot of people did and played early. The number 888 did not play that day but a friend told me that one number 8 was in the three digit winning number.

I think there is something in this you know. I had a lot of dreams in 2000 about the number 8. In 2008 everything my life really came together. My house number is also 88. If you turn the 8 on it's size it looks like the Infinity symbol too. A very powerful and symbolic number indeed.

There is so much going on in the universe that would probably benefit us if we knew about it. My mother told us by doing the math and using numbers we could live better and be lucky. Of course as a child I didn't really listen - but I did hear her (she was right about everything) - and now I can research and find amazing things.

Yes and it's perfectly balanced as well, which means the Chinese know what they are talking about with Yin and Yang - learning to balance the inner, feminine, creative (Yin) with the outer world, doing, masculine part of ourselves (Yang).

Interesting article. I have always studied numbers and their history but have never known the meaning behind numbers of China. What I find interesting is my favorite number is 4! Not so much white Americans but Native Americans have an invinity with the number 4. It is the most sacred number. It stands for all four directions, North, South, East, and West.

- how every country has these lucky or unlucky numbers. I didn't know 13 was lucky in Europe. In the US number 13 was considered unlucky. Especially if such a date should fall on a Friday. Growing up many buildings would not list a 13th floor even if it was taller, and there was no apartment 13. It would be 12, 12a, then 14.

I was reading that a lot of people wanted to marry today because they felt it was lucky - but they don't know why. In Beijing I was told that 9 is a lucky number if it comes before the 8 - so the tour guide told me to open a club with the number 98! In feng-shui and numerology I found out I am a number 9 person. A really Lucky No. for me I won 362.00 on the Pick three using 888 once. I have lived in several address'es with an 8 and I my sister was born on Aug 8th, so I think 8 is very lucky No. it comes up alot in the Lottry here, Maybe people playing pool might have a few negitive stories aboout it.

Hi man, your tour guide didn't tell you 6 is also lucky number in China? :-) 6 in Chinese is "Liu", we have saying "Liu Liu Da Shun" in Chinese, that means make everything goes well, or make things successfully and without any problems. For example, I applied car nubmer, if the one including 8 I wanted is not available, then numbers including 6 is second better choice.
8 also means make your richer, to earn much money, all Chinese like it..
4 is unlucky number like 13 in western, like you said, 4 has same pronounce as "Death" in Chinese, all Chinese don't like it and always try to aviod it..

I am a big fan of Chinese culture (and feng shui too) - because it gives me a view of a world that is both modern but also ancient - with a lot of amazing history. I was in Beijing the year before the Olympics so the big thing was the explanation for why the Olympics was opening on a particular date - and then the ever popular number 9.
By the way, I am a nice old happy lady. Another thing I like about the Asian culture - the respect for elders.
My cousins were in Beijing last month for a week - then they took the high speed train to a port in China where they got on their cruise ship. My cousins were awed by it all. I didn't get a chance to ride the subway as they did - great photos.

Next time you should experenice the Maglev from Pudong airport to Longyang Road station in Shanghai, nearly 400KM/H speed, can you imagine it? In June 2008, one of my group with 60 students from US the kids experienced that and made them impressed. It's the fastest train in China so far.
I love the Maglev and will put that on my list also. I read about the one in China. We have nothing like that here in the USA.

Turn around the other way isn't 4 considered to be a lucky number by most western cultures.
And if you believe 4 is lucky then you'll be in for a treat in China as telephone numbers with 4's in them are the cheapest to buy, especially numbers with lots of 4's in them

I was going through some of my old e-mails 10 years ago and found an e-mail from a guy that said if my house number was 8888, that I might win the lottery? So, I'm thinking about putting 8888 on my bedroom door and my car. Does it matter how many 8's I have?

When I was in China I was told it was best if you have a 9 first - so 98 is considered very lucky.

In Divisoria, the bargain center here in Manila, the most successful mall is called 168. It's been so successful that it has branched out into hotels, residences, etc.
According to the spokesperson of the Filipino-Chinese businessmen who put up the mall, 168 means “road to success” for the Chinese.

I'm looking at a block of land that is number 88. I got a good feeling about this potentially being the number of my future house. I straight away thought of it meaning infinity but have been looking around the net for an exact meaning of 88 in relation to a house number. This site has helped but i'm still a little foggy as there has been so mant ideas thrown around. Can you dumb it down for me?
I've read in feng shui that 88 is lucky - which is why the Chinese wanted the Olympics on August 8th in the year 2008 so the numbers would be 8/8/8. While in China I was told I'd make a fortune in a Chinese community if I opened a club and named in "98" - because 8 following 9 is also very auspicious. Since we are in the 20 year cycle of the number 8 ending 2024 it sounds like you have a good address.
As I plan to look for another home in the future I do want 8 in the address. Hope this helps.

something i have observed and seen about the ox and horse relationship compatibility. first off my cousin is an ox like u BK... and his girlfriend is an horse like me, all they ever do is argue fuss n fight, things just never work out right between them two. and also i have a best friend that is a horse,and his so called fiance is an ox also, there connection is far worst than my cousin... i figured that the main issue with these two sign is they both don't have any trust in each other...

Hello leo! I will check and if you can check back in about 2-3 weeks I think I may have some up to date books since we are in a new lunar year - I'll have to see what is published. But I am totally sold on the feng shui master Lillian Too who has consistently given the best information on this topic - in fact it is her books and website that I used for a lot of research. Of course actually visiting Beijing and speaking to people there gave me even more information. (You'll see a link above all the comments about my visit to Beijing and all the information I got there about the number 8 and why China chose to have the Olympics and the importance of number 8).

I was told rohit - while in Beijing - that if you put a 9 in front of an 8 (98) - it is even more lucky - but not the zeros.

According to the tour guide in Beijing 9 is always lucky. Perhaps one reason is because no matter how many times it is multiplied it can always be reduced to a single digit which is 9. Such as 9x3=27 and 2 and 7 are 9. etc.

Ah - okay, well rohit when I was in China I was told that the people there pick their own mobile numbers where possible - and aim for 8s. I was able to pick my own Google computer telephone number so I picked as many 8s as possible. Generally, all the phone numbers I reviewed all had numbers but rarely zeros.
I would say however, if this is a business number, it may be okay because then it is very easy for people to remember it, and that is what you want, yes? Otherwise, you seem concerned. Maybe you can change it.

I was told while in China rohit if you have a series of numbers try to have as many 8s as possible (I have 3 in my google phone number) and if possible have a 98 in there somewhere - and I do. This is a new number only a few months old and maybe it is psychological but I feel lucky.
For example, I almost got into a few situations and for whatever reason could not move forward and it turned out to be the best thing for me. Saved me a lot of embarrassment. For example I could not send a particular email which I would have regretted - I kept getting a 'try again' notice - at least 20 times (that never happens) and finally deleted it. I'm glad I did.
Can you arrange an ending like 98? By the way, we are in the 20 year cycle of the number 8 which is supposed to end in 2024 - so 12 more years.

Just change the number 4. When I lived in S. Korea I was told the number 4 shouldn't be used because it sounds like the word 'death' - then in China I was told it was unlucky right now. So instead of 4 go with 8 - like 85698.
i consider 4and8 are lucky numbers! because each 4 zodiac Trine(total of 12 signs) is compatible every 4 year apart!... also,for example this leap year comes only every 4 years,right? just like this years Olympics, it makes more sense to have the number 4 lucky also!
I'm glad 4 and 8 work for you tut. Here in the US, 4 is not considered unlucky. It is just when I went to S. Korea that I found out for the first time that the number is best avoided. Thanks for commenting. It's great to get opinions from people all over.
