The Toilet Lid Must Be Put Down! It's Official and Here's Why

Six Reasons to Put Down the Toilet Lid
Always seemed like the right thing to do - put down the lid and close the toilet. Why? Because there is a lid. I never thought of the lid as a backrest. What - do people recline while using the toilet?
Yet, this has been the cause of many wild brawls and people leaving home in the middle of the night - often after falling in to the toilet.
But the lid should be put down and for at least six good reasons I can think of - and there are probably more.
The six reasons why you should put down the toilet lid:
1 - Bacteria-filled mist - Yes, that's right, when you flush the toilet a mist is created. That mist is filled with bacteria. Studies have shown that the mist can travel several feet away every time you flush. So this means it reaches your toothbrushes, towels, shower curtains, every hard surface and probably you while you are still standing there - maybe looking down in the toilet. The toilet lid should be closed before flushing.
2 - Child Safety - Toilet locks exist so children cannot open the toilet. Unfortunately, there have been cases of children falling in. Just the fact that bacteria does exist is reason enough to keep the toilet closed so as not to entice a child. According to the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), a toddler or baby can topple into an open toilet headfirst and can drown. In fact, with children in the house there should be child-safety locks on the bathroom doors.
3 - Pet Safety - Pets love the toilet. That cool fresh water. Dogs often get water this way and even my cat wants to play in the water. But the same bacteria-mist that flies around will now get on your pet. Veterinarians advise against letting your pet drink from the toilet - it's bad for their health and then bad for yours when your pet kisses you.
4 - It's Not a Recliner - This I could never understand. There is a lid and isn't it there for some reason - like closing the toilet. Do people actually sit down and lean back to recline when using the toilet? If so, I don't think it's healthy. Then too, I think of it like a lid on a jar. You open the jar and after you take out the pickle, you then close the jar by putting the lid back on. A lid is supposed to close...well, something. I don't think it's decorative.
5 - Feng-shui - Feng-shui (pronounced fung schway) literally translates to wind - water. Also known as geomancy, it is an ancient Chinese science based upon the philosophy of the movement of chi (natural energy) through our environment. The Queen of feng-shui is Lillian Too. She often writes about the power of water and how to use it effectively. Lillian Too is also in the master category of feng-shui practitioners and she says toilets should always be closed because water has drawing power. You don't want to draw the energy in your home down the toilet. The open toilet will also draw your wealth down the toilet. That's all I needed to hear. Well, I love all things Lillian Too so this works for me.
6 - Falling In - This falls under the category of 'also leaving the seat up.' Falling in is one of those great reasons to put down the lid - and avoid screams in the night and loud fights. If you have ever fallen in the toilet you know it can be painful, messy and most of all...unnecessary. There is simply no way anyone can fall in the toilet if the lid is down. Why, you ask, don't you turn on the light if you are staggering through the dark at night to get to the toilet? This way you can make sure the lid - and seat are down. Well, studies have shown that it is best to keep lights low if you must get up during the night - turning on bright lights can wake you up completely, making it impossible to go back to sleep.
I think this is when falling in the toilet most often happens. During those night staggers. But when you close the lid, the seat will be down as well.
Update with a friendly reminder - thanks to the writer pmmcray (below): When using public toilets - they don't have lids - but have that super-powerful flush and there you are in this enclosed space. Ugh! It's one thing being at home with your own bacteria, but could anything be filthier than a public toilet - and now with that bacteria-mist? No, so open the door, flush with your foot, close the door and get far away. I hate even thinking about this.
Note: A pretty cool toilet seat is one my son and Daughter-In-Love have. The toilet lid automatically closes.

This is all true. I have insisted the opposite for the men very often. Men cannot aim! Men think they can hit the bulls eye with their magic wand but like always- it's out of control! Try having a brother with an uncontrollable aim! But- I submit to the seat down for safety for you ladies and that "spray". And, my toothbrush is in there!
What a great and unique hub !!! This is why I love it here on HP, all the variety of topics to write about and to read.
Thanks for sharing
Take care
Eiddwen.
In my household, we're still working on the seat being down. Another 20 years and I'll start lobbying for the lid. Baby steps, baby steps...
Hello BK, I guess the Feng Shui that discusses toilet seats and modern appliances is the evolved version of Feng Shui.
Cheers. :)
I am grateful I was raised from the very beginning to put the lid down, of course that being said, it isn't very comforting when hardly anyone else will do it. LOL
Great article my friend.
Well..you just never know do ya? I've read studies that suggest your kitchen sink is actually more bacteria-ridden. It depends how clean you keep everything. Toilets vary greatly on their flushing effectiveness. Some of the newer toilets also create far less turbulence, therefore less 'mist'. Nice job (pun intended), BK.
LOL . . I had heard about the bacteria a couple of years ago and have made a consistent practice of closing the lid prior to flushing.
My husband and I have separate bathrooms so this prevents me from killing him in his sleep due to middle of the night falling in the bowl!
When using public restrooms with no lids I open the door and stand back when flushing. Voted up, marked useful and funny.
I'm a big feng-shui fan and have made it a point to close the toilet lid - because I don't want my wealth to go down the toilet. Yay! Meanwhile, when I forget to put down the lid my kitty immediately hopes on top and starts prowling around - exactly what I don't want her to do. Yikes!
What a fun hub! Rated up!
I'm glad you pointed out the danger to children. What's harmless to us is all new to children. Yes, put on a lock and keep the door closed. Those hard surfaces are a danger too.
A fun and informative hub! Rated up - and close the toilet!
What a great hub! I never have read so much on this topic before ;) Thanks for sharing.
My daughter, the nurse, always insisted that the lid be down when the toilet is flushed. It wasn't until I saw a Dr. Oz episode that said the same thing and gave the reason why that it finally sunk in. Now that lid is down when the toilet is flushed and stays down until it needs to be used. And I'm going to take pmccray's advice when flushing in a public restroom.
Great hub, BK! Rated up!!
I am "flushed with success." I put the lid down! Wow! It looks nice. Thanks for sharing. Flag up!
What an amusing - and useful - hub! I've always put the lid down to prevent things - and pets - from falling in. You've given another very important reason for lowering the lid - the "bacteria-filled mist" sounds very unpleasant!
Very good and amusing hub! There is so many things that can go wrong when humans use the toilet:) the lid, the toilet ring, the aiming and so on. Thanks for all this good reasons for closing the lid!
I'm totally with you on this. I dropped my new toothbrush into the toilet once and I don't want that to happen ever again! :)
Not to mention the bathroom is a lot more attractive when the lid is down. You've got a chance there for a Home & Garden photo. But I'm with Om Paramapoonya. In my small master bedroom bath I've got a glass shelf over the crapper that holds cosmetics and scents...too, too easy to knock one of those things into the water!
And that business about the mist, so true! But also, water evaporates faster when the lid is up, and with that evaporation, scuzzy ring around the water line happens really fast.
Up, useful, and funny. What a great read.
I am on your side. TOILET SEAT DOWN!!!
In the interest of reducing the mist, I now promise to be more careful about leaving my recliner open! :)
Feng Shui, energy, chi, wealth, keep bacteria away...great Hub to remind us of many things to help make our lives better.
I am going to keep leaving my lid down, too.
I always insisted that the toiletseat is put down.
Thank you Bk! Luckily I married a man who does put the toilet seat down and its saved me so much trauma! Voted up!
I completely agree with you and after telling my children about the mist they were sold, just the one problem, you can't do that with most public toilets, so we stretch out our foot to flush and run.. or those automatic ones leave you no choice, but at home we do have a choice and the lid must be put down here and always.
:) Katie
I do agree with this carolyn.
Thank you for this. I do not understand why people do NOT close the lid. As you say, it is there for a reason! When and IF I must use a public toilet, after I have cleaned it, I carry wipes just for that purpose, of course, I use my foot to flush and try to out run the mist. Run on sentence I know. lol. I came upon the self closing toilet seats in Japan. Love it. Wonder if I could get them for our homes.
Lord Bryan
Nice hub - i really do need to get one of these!
Your son and daughter in love have a toilet that closes the lid automatically? I've never heard of such a thing! Now THIS is ideal!
Really a Very Nice information about custom farming business. Great Thanks for share this useful information.
I'm so glad you wrote this! My apartment is a closed lid toilet household, mostly because of my kitty though. She likes to drink from them, ew!
Is that why we are not all rich, the men in our families always forget to put the lid down! lol
BkCreative. I must say, I think you have hit on a topic in which everyone is concerned.
Lord Bryan
ha ha I would think that would make a good hub, worshipping the porcelain God to make us millions and keeping men from the toilets, because obviously that is we are all poor!lol But again that would be just a fun hub and full of b.s. but funny! lol
I do go to the bathroom and make sure that the lid is down, most of the time, because that is where I have ' time out from the kids'.......strange I know, but they are boys, so I do have to be careful where I sit or stand, nothing is safe in our bathrooms, walls, toliet seat, etc, including things they like to ' what they call burying at sea'.......uggggggg.....good hub, especially the germ part, I have a lot of cleaning products to stay ahead of the boys. I am going to mention to them the things you say about closing before flushing, and I will let you know there reaction.
Thank you BK, for such an outstanding and awesome hub, I didn't know some of the information. God bless you. creativeone59
Loved it! Oh no, another thing for me to think about. I've never given much thought to the mist that comes from public toilets, and that's strange, because I do put the lid down at home. Thanks Bk for the heads up. Voted Up!
Cute hub but makes very good points. I had heard about the bacteria-mist issue a couple years ago and started 'training' everyone at home to close the lid. They do for the most part. Also, yes, it's bad feng shui to have the lid open.
Great hub. Practical, humorous, and filled with valuable information. In my home, we always keep the lid closed. I think it looks better, no anxiety about which seat is up and I always knew about the bacteria spray. Rated up, awesome, and funny.
Ugh! My bad. From now own, I'll take heed with your advises. Thanks, BkCreative.
I love the idea of the automatic closing lid, BkCreative. Cool hub! A good reminder to all those men out there!! lol! Kids too! : )
BKCreative! I so agree! It really is just plain, practical good hygiene etiquette! Thank You for sharing, Peace & Blessings!
Bk, you know what else is gross? Those plastic, foam filled toilet seats. Sometimes they crack and get urine in the cracks and then they stink. Yuck! I can not even sit on one of these, even if it is at someones house I know.
Tina
Bk, I used to work where they were first made. Everyone loved them back then. hehe
Good info! I found out years ago that germs are exposed everytime the toilet is flushed and that was enough for me.
Hey feel free to check out some of my latest hubs.
Thanks for sharing.
I loved this hub. and i loved all the comments. And thanks for making me now paranoid about leaving that lid up. Things will never be the same. Every time i flush my toilet i will now think of you. (not sure if that was a compliment or not) LOL.
I saw a special on t.v. about rats, and how they are so agile and supple that they can make their way from the sewer to your toilet. And people have actually been bitten on their butts by rats coming up through the drainage system. That one kind of gave me pause as well as your article. So, now when i got to the B.Room, i will not only be thinking about rats, but you as well. (darn, that did not sound like a compliment either). LOL. No disrespect intended. I loved this hub. Good job. dw
You share useful information about toilet. We should know this. Thanks for share with us. Rated up!

Ah - Ha...so that's where all of my money has gone - right down the toilet. You made me a Feng Shui believer. Have a beautiful book on Feng Shui. Now - I shall read and practice it. This is one of my favorite hubs. I thought I knew everything about germs, toxins, etc. It just goes to show you, how little a person really knows. Did I say I love this hub? Bookmarking it and forwarding to family and friends. Geeeesh - I am such a huge fan, especially now. A marvelous work here which deserves all the buttons and a big rate up! :) vocalcoach
Hi,BK, haven't seen you in awhile. This is not a problem for me but somewhere, some time, I remember sitting down in water and cracking my back. Must have been many years ago. They should make the seats that have to be held up to end that problem. It really could cause a serious problem, you know? Besides having to take a shower at 3 or 4 AM!
I never really thought about the toilet seat much. Now I'll never look at the toilet the way I used to.
I am so glad to read this information. Love it.
With what you have written, there is no reason why the lid not be put down. Thanks.
I have fallen in the toilet too many times and in addition to the bacteria filled mist, this is hands down one reason why the toliet lid must be put down in our home. I love it!
These are all very sound reasons! Great job!
Nice to have more to back up the argument with men about which came first...the lid up or down. Thanks for the ammo :)
hi BK...well this flying mist thing is rather disturbing! I do generally keep the lid down because of the dog...too much drool...too much toilet water...too hard to tell the difference between the two! Voted up and useful!
Oh goodness. It bothers me so much when a public toilet doesn't have a lid! I can't help but think how many toilet particles are floating around the room.
My husband is pretty good about leaving the lid down after one accident a few years ago when our cat fell in the toilet. She liked to sit on the lid, but one time he forgot and left it up. We heard a splash and the cat started yowling. It was a little funny but not very hygiene.
Bac mist......yuck!
Hi BK, This is a good list, but #1, and #5 whoooa. HP continues to be a source of wealthy information. I would have never thought of the lid being down as something that is Feng-shui. And the bacteria mist OMG close that lid! Thank you for sharing with the HP community.
LOL, this just became mandatory reading for my wife and kids.
Awesome! funny but true
Cool article written in good humor, I enjoyed it. Item #1 on your list is very true, the danger of bacteria should be enough to get people to always close the lid!
And really who wants to look at the inside of a toilet to begin with when you go into to maybe just wash your hands or shower it's just wrong
I like going into a bathroom that has the toilet lid down cause who want a bathroom that smells like a toilet, yeah leaving the seat up puts that dank toilety smell in the air,p-ewww.
Hal
Toilet water evaporates and can cause many health issues. Please put your lid down whenever you are not using the toilet. It only take one second to put it down and two seconds to put it up. This is the most important reason why the lid was invented.
Bwahaha. This is hilarious and informative. Good stuff!
I argue with my wife about the seat... well not argue, but discuss, and she often brings up the falling in thing. My counter point is if she doesn't put the seat up, then I just might sprinkle on the seat. Why should I have to put the seat down if she doesn't have to put it up?
Well there isn't much validity with it, but I think it is fun.
You know....I never considered all of those reasons, likely because I don't leave any of my toiletries in the bathroom anyway.
I grew up with four brothers, so keeping my items out of the bathroom is still a part of how I am. BUT, there are the other items, towels, the sink, which is relatively close.
The only thing I wonder about is, if the toilet bowl begins to overflow, having the lid open while flushing allows you to see the water rising above the level it should be, and react quickly and shut the water off, before all of that crap (no pun...or pun intended...whichever) is all over the floor.
Now I don't know what to do!
This is one issue that divides the human race right down the middle. I had heard about bacteria mist. This leaves a big question mark on the hygiene of toiletries kept inside. Why bother trying to prove or disprove? Let us keep the lid closed. As you have pointed out, that is the purpose of lids!
Lid down, there should be no ifs or buts about it. But unfortunatly I keep arguing with our roommates about this issue. We have 2 bathrooms and my boyfriend and I keep the lid closed and the bathroom door shut, now we have 3 male roommates who think it is much better to leave the seat and lid up plus leaving the bathroom door open is also cool..... apart from having had 2 cats fly into the open toilet as they are used to jumping onto the lid and then up on the sink for some fresh water or attention, one of those was a kitten and she nearly drowned, partly due to the shock. It started to smell in the house, which I find really discusting and annoying. The roommates bathroom is just juk since there are only male using it.... what do I do to convince them to keep the lid down and the door closed.......
It is only in the past couple of years that a friend brought to my attention that flushing a toilet with the lid up will result in a bacteria filled mist leaving the toilet bowl. I have since removed my toothbrush from the bathroom and always put the lid down. I've tried to instil this into the rest of the family too, although that's not so easy. I think I will have to show them your hub!!
I like the sound of a toilet seat that closes itself, a conversation starter for sure!!
Voted up and shared.
I donno know y, but I always keep it open
its bad enough we have to put the seat up to piss but now we have to put it Down as well why can't girls just look before they sit

I am a victim. When I was about three my dad left the seat and lid up, and I fell in during the middle of the night. My parents never forgot my indignation. And can you believe it? They thought it was funny when I indignantly let my dad know my feelings about it -- in the middle of the night. I don't think I've ever lived in a house where the lid was put down. It's hard enough to get men to put the seat back down.
